What's the budget for upgrades, and what monitor (make & model, or resolution & refresh rate) are you pairing it with?

Are your games stored on the HDD? Is BullGuard still installed?

There are areas that could be easily upgraded, but whether it would make a difference will depend on:
  • Where do you find your current PC is lacking?
  • Is it just slow in general, or are there specific games/apps that are lagging?
  • How full is the boot drive?
  • Are your temps under control?

Thanks for your prompt reply

To be honest it isn't slow it is mainly games like COD MW3 where at times i lag, but on others others such as Elite Dangerous, WOW, FS22 they are all fine, boot up is separate to games as i have a separate M.2 and SDD installed

i think my temperature is under control i would need to check. just didn't know if i needed move the RAm up to 32gb and change graphic card maybe.

would what i have last for another 5 years for gaming?

What make and model monitor are you using?

When you say it lags, what fps are you getting?

i have two iiyama red eye G Master , when COD MW3 lags the FPS drops on average i get about 100 fps on a good day on a bad day the game just stops, i think that is the game rather than my system though (Dont know why) on FS22 i am getting 60fps, vram 45% Ram 38% and GPU 38%

the monitor is 1920 x1080 at 165hz and 0.8ms (hope that helps). No issue on budget, if i dont need to upgrade the whole PC then thats fine

Okay, I just want some advice, obviously money is an object and I could spend 10k on a new PC, why would I if mine will last and I upgrade the ram and graphics card, just looking for some advice on this

We just need to know the max budget for this project. Without a ceiling we don’t know what to work to.

Its a fixed sum, its not reliant on meeting any conditions, its purely what you have available for upgrades?

one area for upgrade that really sticks out is the monitor 1080p is ancient history, and any upgrade to the GPU would be a waste as that monitor would bottleneck it, if you look at my signature you'll see I run a 2070 super myself, and I've got a 1440p and an ultrawide running on it

If the lagging is only happening in one game, then it'd suggest a game issue or a config issue that's conflicting with that game only. We haven't even diagnosed this yet, but the 3700X and an 8GB 2070 Super should be fine for 1080p gaming.

If we throw a 5800X3D and RTX4070 at the problem, you may get more frames in that game, but may still see the random lagging...so best to find the cause before trying to fix it.

I have very similar specs to the OP currently (2700X CPU, 2080TI GPU and 850W PSU).

Your CPU is noticeably better, there's not much in it on the graphics cards, you've a little less VRAM, but I think it uses the same die as mine and its a newer release. I've looked at a 5800X3D as my main upgrade if I encounter problems but it is lasting so well I may end up gifting it and rebuying when the new generation of CPUs are out. The only thing that might cause you difficulty in upgrading is the CPU limit; going to the 5800x3D might mean you are pushing things for a future GPU upgrade but if you are at 1080p then you really don't need a GPU upgrade.

As Martin says - your first upgrade is the monitor, to do your current kit justice. Your second might as well be the 5800X3D, if you want it to last another five years, but I've a worse & older CPU than your current one and I'm still playing games fine. I play on 1440p (OS and games both on SSDs) and have no issues with random lagging.

As Tony says - you have a problem to troubleshoot. The bad news is that's less fun than shopping, the good news is its a lot cheaper and if you have a bunch of experts on this forum who are really helpful with that sort of thing. I think people were asking how full your boot drive was and what your temps were like?
