Upgraded! - Processor compatability

2 years ago i got my pc here from PCSPECIALIST, quite recently I've made some improvements.
I upgraded my graphics card to a Nevidia 970.
And i got 2x 8GB sticks of memory.

All working fine.
But I'm a dummy, at most.
I'm now looking to put in a better processor. I play modern games and get a good steady 60fps.
But on an mmorpg i play very regurlary, as soon as the 100 players meets the enemies 100 players, all goes kaputt and i struggle to reach 20 fps.
So wondering what processor will work with my motherboard and work with my setup.
I'm looking at an i7.

TLDR:
Need new processor
what processor will be compatible with my system?

I wouldn't have though it would be your cpu. What case do you have? The best cpu you could get is the i7-3770k

Also, if this is gw2 you are talking about.....you will find a new cpu will help somewhat, but the game engine literally cant cope with so many players on screen at once; all processing goes to the cpu; and frames drop; so even monster systems tank in frames with so many chars on screen. Try limiting the amount of chars displayed etc, and untick high res characters. Getting the 3770k and overclocking may be your best bet, but this could be done on an i5 option instead. This may make a substantial difference if you are looking at this game in particular; but dont expect miracles for wvw zergs etc.
Im afraid if you are upgrading for gw2, it simply isnt worth it; and this is the case with most mmorpgs; its a limitation in the game engine that holds you back. Hyperthreading etc will just be a waste as it isnt used. An i7 would be a big waste in my honest opinion unless you do photo editing etc or something else that can use it. Have a read on other peoples opinions that have done the same. :)

If only there was a "Best answer" option.
Thank you good sir! This was really insightful and you've just saved me £250.

Yea, it was indeed Guild Wars 2, I am definitely just going to set the model load limit down, probably best to gain the fps.
Thanks again :)

With MMO's and many online based games the priority order is CPU>GPU>Memory, most MMO's use far more processor power than graphics power due to the nature of the clients.

However I agree it very likely isn't his processor that is an issue, nor would it be any other component of the PC, MMO's are notoriously laggy whenever there are large amounts of people in the same area.

Guild wars 2 can be extremely laggy even on the best machines with the best connections especially in the mists and other player vs player areas, there's not a lot can be done about it. Two things I've found reduce the lag a lot for me in GW2 are shadows and AA, try turning off shadows and AA and see if that helps.
