Valeon Laptop CPU Temps

I recently purchased a Valeon 17.3 " laptop.Great specs
Ryzen 5900hx,RTX 3070 2k Screen etc.
Performance is excellent, however while gpu temps remain decent for a gaming laptop under load(between 75°c and 85°c),the CPU is getting up to 95°c underload.
Pc Specialist inform me this is normal for this laptop but I "may experience some thermal throttling".
Now,the CPU is only being utilised about 50% while the GPU is at 100% while playing Warzone/Battlefield V.
I have tried using Control Center software to reduce CPU power draw from 90w to 60w as it looks like the CPU is well on top of its job to see if I can reduce temps but it's having little effect.
Is anyone else having similar issues or have any suggestions as I'm not comfortable running those high temps for extended periods.
Thanks

I have the same issues with my Valeon also , seeing temps at 84-91 degrees depending on load . I`ve tried to mitigate it somewhat using a laptop cooling pad and it has given me less times CPU hits 90 than before .
Next up will probably be a repaste of thermal grease .

Looking at reviews on this unit, the Eluktronics XVII and the Infinity M7 which use the same chassis and software as the Valeon, they had similar temps in testing to what we are seeing,so sounds like the normal for this unit.
I wonder if AMD CPUs have a higher temp threshold than intel?

If I`m not on thin ice , The Ryzen 9 5900HX has a temp limit at 105 degrees Centigrade . So 90 is not overly dangerous . Hot sure , but not throttling . HWinfo 64 temp sensors have never shown my 5900HX to throttle at 90-92 degrees . With cooling pad it often enough stays at 80-85 degrees , peaking ( rarely ) at 90, as compared to without it hitting 90-93 degrees quite often .
My RTX 3070 stays at a cool 67-70 degrees degrees , at 98 % load with cooling pad .

Your results are more less identical to my own, also using a cooling pad.
I will have a cautionary play with Control Center and see if I can reduce the temps a little more, otherwise I may just have to live with it.
Can't fault the performance though, seriously fast laptop, just glad I took the Gold warranty on it I think 😁

When playing I usually set the cpu to 25W and the whole things stay well under 80°C (cpu+gpu). Today with ambiant temperature around 19°C playing RE8 maxed out give me a constant 72/76°C. The GPU is allowed to pump 125W + 10W of dynamic boost. I know we don't have the same CPU (intel vs amd), but you could give a try even if it sound really little power to the CPU. Worst case you can start using those values and if the FPS is not enough add 5W and restart until you are satisfied of the ratio temperature/fps.

25w does sound low,but like you say,we have different CPU,and I'm a novice at this really so will definitely give that a try.
Thanks for help Romain and Krista, will let you know what I achieve 👍

There are SPL,sPPT and fPPT slider in the control center Which of these three sliders would you adjust to drop the CPU power as a whole?

I don't know AMD cpu so you will have to try it yourself or maybe someone could help you to set the good values for SPL, SPPT and fPPT to limit the CPU to 25W. As long as you don't go over the default value I guess you are safe to try differents values for those sliders by yourself.
First I would google for some info about what is SPL, sPPT, and fPPT just to have an idea :)

Thanks,so I did some more digging and found a post from a user with an Asus Rog with a 3070 and AMD 5900hx combo having similar issues.
He dropped his sliders all the way down to 15w and got his temps under load to around 80°c.So I dropped the SPL and SPPT to 30w and kept fPPT at 50w and have recorded a drop from 94°c to 86°c for CPU under load with no noticeable fps drops so this looks like it works well.
Will try pushing it a bit lower and see how good I can get it,and also see how much it drops the CPU max frequencies.

Hi,so I have the sliders now set to 25w on the CPU and I'm achieving 76°c while playing Apex Legends maxed out with AVG 120fps @2k and 81°c on Warzone with a 100fps cap which I'm more than happy with.
HWmonitor is telling me that the CPU is still hitting top speed 4.6ghz which is also great, but it begs the question,if full performance can be achieved with less wattage and improved thermals, then why are the manufacturers shipping the laptops with these hotter running parameters in place?🤔

@trickyrickyg83 Yeah I'm happy to know that you managed to get acceptable results :)

In short the game don't use all the core available in the cpu, so the cpu don't need a lot of watts to run the game workload at a nice frequency. If you try same scenario with a cpu benchmark that use all the core you should see a difference and lower frequency. This is the behavior of the intel processor in my laptop. I guess for amd it is more or less the same but I could be wrong.

Hi folks! Just piggybacking on this - in exactly the same boat so glad to know that I haven't got a faulty unit. I am seeing identical temps to yours which I was a bit concerned with (especially due to the noisy fans). I sent my Valeon back as an RMA for PCS to repaste and re-seat which seems to have helped a bit actually (a few degrees when idle and browsing). I'm still seeing higher temps than I'd like when not under load.

The most perplexing part is the rather disappointing CPU score I've been getting on Timespy (9400-9600) with temps hitting 95C. Ive seen others with the Eluktronics version hit 10000+ for CPU with a temp at 76-81C but I'm guessing that's because of the liquid metal that Eluktronics applies. I'm therefore wondering if the score capping out is due to the thermal throttling. What scores are you seeing and at what settings?

I've also been looking at undervolting the GPU to try and get some more thermal headroom but haven't had time. Is this + adjusting GPU settings in control centre something anyone has looked in to successfully?

95c at 50% load is very high. For comparison's sake, my CPU peaks at around 83 at 90-100% usage for CPU intensive games like Cyberpunk. I'd personally look into doing a repaste with a high quality paste like Grizzly Kyronaut or Noctua NT-H2, cleaning out the fans, and investing in a good laptop cooler like Klim Cyclone.

Also, I'm not sure if the keys are the same for you, but FN + 1 puts the fans on maximum load. It's noisy but it does help keeping the laptop cool during gameplay.

Looking at reviews for the same unit they also reach 95°c in tests so I'm thinking that is the norm and that a repaste might not improve matters much.My unit is pasted with Arctic MX 4 and is only 2 weeks old so dust shouldn't be an issue either.I will however repaste I think with Kryonaut as I used this on my previous Clevo with good reduction from standard paste.
See enclosed pics from Jarrod Tech and Hardware Canucks reviews showing temps at different settings.
As reducing CPU wattage does give me a much reduced temperature i will make some different profiles in Control Center for each scenario to keep my Cpu temps in check but still boost the GPU fully as those temps are fine.

I had silly high temps (95degC +) with essentially turbo mode selected in games so CPU had access to over 100W. As a console gamer I had not realised it was a pretty pointless show off profile that was not sustainable. I now run either 30W, 35W or 40W in control centre. MSFS20 in VR is CPU 80-89 degrees depending upon environment with 40W.
