Vortex II 17inch laptop Inbuilt Mic problem

I don't see any button to switch it on. Device manager shows a green tick next to the mic device but when I try testing out the mic it's not recognising sounds even when my volume is slided all the way up. The inbuilt mic is that hole above the touchpad isn't it?

EDIT: Just got it working. In the recording sound devices bit it shows three devices.

1) Microphone - ATAPI Internal ATAPI Jack. This is the one I can record from but it only works when I'm speaking right next to the inbuilt mic. I tried maxing out the volume but it's not helping. I want to be able to sit and record my voice not bend down each down I have to say something.
2) Microphone - Rear Panel 3.5mm Jack. Not sure what this is for but it's the only one marked with the green tick.
3) Line In - Rear Panel 3.5mm Jack.

How do I configure the inbuilt mic so the volume is better?

In the audio devices section where you saw the 3 microphone options, try right-clicking the 3.5mm jack options and select "disable". Then see if you have a green tick next to the ATAPI Internal Jack. If not, right click on the ATAPI and see if there's an option to select "Set as Default Device".

I don't have a laptop, so I'm guessing a bit. Hope it works.
