Vortex II vibrations

I've noticed that there are times when I run my hand very lightly across the palm rests of the laptop, I can feel a vibration. But this is only when I run my hand/finger across it. If I just rest my hand on the palmrest, there's no vibration. If I press more firmly, it doesn't happen.

I thought it was due to the material used but it didn't happen when I switched the laptop on.

What's happening?

No it's switched on. If it's the HDD, then it's not doing it right now. Can feel it across the front palmrest on the shiny bit but not on the keyboard area. And it's only if I lightly run my hand or finger across. If I press firmly, there's no vibration.

I'm inclined to think it may be a fan or something.

There are no fans under the palm rest, just the battery, optical drive and teh hard drive, it is probably the HDD causing the issue.

During a virus scan or anything that involves reading or writing a lot of data would result in a lot of hard drive activity.

Vibrations in desktop drives are sometimes witnessed to be so vigorous that the desktop case itself annoying vibrates.

If it's a serious issue and you can clarify that it's the hard drive, perhaps you could look into reviews of hard drives which are known to cause limited vibrations.

well it didn't happen when playing NFS:MW just now. I've kept an eye on things and it's always when the chassis is warm/hot, so likely to be a fan somewhere.

Coz I've got no new games yet. Have been stuck playing on the PS3 for so long, I need to get back into the world of WASD+mouse. The last PC FPS I played was CS:S and CS 1.6.
There's no sound when I can feel the vibration. Odd.

Well the Sandy Bridge quad cores are great with GTA IV should you have one of those; so that's one suggestion so far.

Is your Vortex a 17"? Which side of the 'palm rest' vibrates more? Check the underneath of your case to see what would be contained within.

Are you sure its vibrations and not static electricity? My girlfriends Mac Book Pro does that all the time, feels like a vibration but is some form of electrical current running through it. Doesn't seem to do any harm to person or computer.

^^^That's what I'm thinking. But it doesn't happen all of the time. Not worried about it but just curious.
