Vortex III = How to make yourself Smug....

Like a lot of people I've only ever had shop bought standard spec laptops, however I decided this time would be different so searched for a more custom feel. After a lengthy search and comparison of whatever custom laptop sites i could find i settled on a few, i then "built" pretty similar laptops on each and found that PCS was by the far best (couldn't find anywhere that gave specs like my new beast for a similar price). I also found the information on the site about each part useful but I did use other sites to compare performance of individual parts before deciding on my final choice.

Then came the few months of changing my mind over and over again as to what i wanted exactly, this was helped by a fair bit of researching the parts available. In the end i finally decided on what i wanted and set in motion the order which contained:

With this i opted for fast track delivery but wasn't expecting how quick it would be. As most I was constantly checking the status of my build from the word go even though i know it should be 3 days later that it shipped. However after ordering on the Monday evening i was pleasantly surprised when by Tuesday evening my order had been built tested and shipped and arrived on the Wednesday. This definitely added brownie points for PCS onto the reasons why i would continue using them (I've never been impressed that much by delivery times).

Upon looking at the main packaging there were a few dents and holes from the delivery process but nothing that overly concerned me as other people have had. The laptop and cooling stand inside were well protected in their individual boxes inside surrounded by packaging so the individual boxes themselves having no marks or dents. (I was however quite surprised at the size of the box)

Now onto the important stuff.

First impression/ Looks

Some people may want a fancy looking machine but that can come at a price of what it can actually do. My first gaze on this showed it to be a simple yet quite sexy looking beast. It may be plain but the metal finish on top and the wrist rest parts look stunning (although i have now covered the top part with a skin just to add my own style to it but the original looks good as well). The metal finish on the wrist rest part also gives a nice cool feeling when using for occasional typing without your hands constantly heating it up. As another reviewer has said this minimalistic look is also good as at first glance some people wouldn't think its anything more than a standard laptop so therefore could deter thieves wanting abit more. I have actually had people comment "is that it" until i show them what this thing can actually do.

IMG_3568.jpg

Size wise it is quite chunky but if you want a 17" plus laptop it@ not for sticking in your pocket and carrying everywhere, I occasionally move laptops as i work away from home but its only about once a month. So if you do want to carry yours around a lot think of how you will do it and if you want to have something this size as its got a decent weight to it.

As well as the laptop itself being chunky the AC Adaptor is also the biggest i have ever seen for a laptop being over twice the size of the one i had for my old HP but again anyone getting something this size won't being constantly on the move with it. The other strange thing is cable lengths, as most people have sad it's the opposite from every other laptop I have owned. Normally a short cable to "brick" then long cable to laptop, it's alot easier having it this way but the backwards lengths of cables with this don't cause much hassle for me personally.

Screen

IMG_3564.jpg

This took me awhile to decide upon. I've always had glossy screens so I'm used to the reflections but debated over a change but after awhile kept with what i knew. Some might prefer Matte but I will say the glossy look fantastic, yes it does have reflections with light from certain angles but as I said I'm used to it so hardly notice it. The colours are amazing and had to turn the brightness down a tad after turning it on as it was so much more vibrant than my previous laptop. As well as colours the resolution mixed with the other bits I had put in this make all the games I've played so far look so good I spent a lot of time just looking at things instead of playing.

One downside however is that after about a week something just didn't look right and I found a nice little dead pixel towards the bottom left of the screen, at the moment I'm seeing if I can live with it as i don't have the chance of returning because I need to use the laptop. Having said that it's only really noticeable up close and with all the movement in videos and games you forget its there until there's a steady colour on that part of the screen.

Keyboard
This is the bit that has taken the most to get used to. Like a lot have said the keyboard is abit squashed, seems to take up the same space as my old HPs keyboard but the keys are definitely less spaced out. It has taken a little while but I don't think this is a reason for someone to not get one of these. The hardest part to get used to is the area with the arrow keys, small enter key and shift key. This area seems particularly cramped but after a conscious effort to look where I was putting my fingers to start with it's now fine and I haven't had the same problem as some with the smaller size of the enter key as I've always used my pinky to tap the bottom of the key on any keyboard.

One problem some people have had is keys sticking or not responding. I did have this problem with my TAB key (it need a firmer press to do something) however after a couple of weeks use it's working alot better.

The backlight is a nice idea and does look good, a range of colours to suit whatever you like and split in 3 sections if you want to light the sides or middle different colours and also a brightness setting to suit your needs. This function comes in handy if you do have the lights down (especially those who choose the glossy screen and are doing something at night where they definitely don't want any glare) I've found in the past it's a nightmare to try and type in the dark especially with a bright screen right infront of you, however that is no more thanks to lit keys.

Speakers / Sound

If I was going to spend my time complaining it may well be in this section. The sound itself is nice and clear, no noise or unwanted sounds at all, nice switching between speakers for that surround sound feel. However I do wish I'd invested in more than just the standard sound card maybe then I wouldn't feel like something was missing. Sure the sound is perfect but the volume is not, if you want to listen to music or anything with a bit of base at a decent volume this will leave you disappointed (my old HPs SRS Premium surround sound with sub blows this out of the water, couldn't hear anything from it at max volume while the old laptop wasn't even close to max). People complain about the speakers but I do like them, I think its maybe the sub that needs a bit more meat to it plus maybe i should stop being a skinflint and go for a more expensive sound option haha

Finally whats it like to run......

The short answer is it's a dream to run. I have tried doing multiple tasks, running games and other things at once that i might personally do and this thing doesn't even bat an eyelid. Every game I currently own (Some are old though so bear that in mind) run on max settings without a hitch. This includes lag and the fans, well i say fans but you could be mistaken for thinking there is'nt any as even when running hard i can barely hear it. Incase it did get very hot I bought the Zalman ZM-NC3000S cooling stand. The stand itself is really good, puts a nice angle on the keyboard for typing, plenty of space under near for air circulation and the massive fan would I'm sure keep things cool and with the fan running on the stand there is somehow no extra noise what so ever to contend with. I say I'm sure it would keep the laptop cool as i have only had the stand running to test it other than that it has been used as a basic stand so far, even gaming for a few hours hasn't made this wonderous machine that hot (definitely nowhere near as hot as a friends Dv7 that cuts out after a few hours due to the heat)

No doubt some people could get my beast to slow down to a halt but for my needs it does things smoother than real life and is a complete joy to use, although I'm still in the honeymoon phase where all i want to do is keep it in bubble wrap so it doesn't break. This however is completely ridiculous as once you feel a Vortex III you will know it feels like the gods themselves have carved it out of granite and given it to you personally.

Cheers, also just noticed the bottom of the review had disappeared after cutting and pasting into two separate comments haha heres the last small bit .....

It is still quite early for me to comment more about how things go long term so I'm sure I will be popping back to update this if and when I think of more to be added and to add better quality pics if i get them (could only take some on my phone so apologise for the quality).

If I've missed something you would like to have known or you want to ask something about the Spec I have then let me know and I'll be happy to answer when I can

If you can you could upgrade the warranty from standard to silver for £5, it covers delivery/collection costs from 1 month to a year in case there is a problem with your laptop.
