The pcs email support have been very helpful and I am now almost ready to place my order.

Could anyone here tell me if they have ever got WiDi to work on a Vortex III system.

The pcs staff have informed me that the following Wi-Fi card does indeed have Wi-Di which is great but reading up about it on the Intel site states the computers requirements are;

(Abbreviated selection of the requirements follows)

System Component Requirements

my question is will the vortex III work as it has a

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3610QM (2.30GHz) 6MB

Which is NOT in the list above (could the list be out of date/incomplete?)

The vortex (I think) doesn’t have Intel® HD Graphics unless it is on the

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670M - 1.5GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11 graphics card.

But I think the vortex III also has an onboard graphics card too,

It has Nvidia® Optimus™ Technology

Which switches (I think) between the on-board and the separate graphics card.

so could this on-board card be Intel® HD Graphics

or have I got totally the wrong end of the stick.

I am not sure which phrases are technologies and which are trade names etc.

Confused….

Thanks for any clarification

That list is out of date, the new Ivy Bridge that you have does support WiDI, see here about halfway down. Of course, you also need a WiDi receiver, but that's a slightly different subject.

That's good news thanks.

but will my graphocs support it?

it keeps mentions intel graphics.

i don't know if the means an intel card/sub system or an intel chipset on the gpu

thanks

It basically means the integrated graphics on the CPU, the Intel HD Graphics 4000.

It's a combination of the Intel CPU (with Integrated Graphics), Intel Wireless Centrino card, and Intel WiDi receiver that you plug into the external TV/Monitor. It does mean you can't use the 'external' nvidia graphics card with WiDi though, you will have to use Optimus to switch to the Intel.

Just a cottom picking minute everyone!!!!!

are you telling me that the i7 processor has an onboard gpu in it?

when did that happen.....

I know i was a bit behind the times but not this far...

well this all looks like good news.

I think i will change the Wi-Fi card to the intel advanced-N 6235 + Bluetooth

as i think this has WiDi and bluetooth.

teh extra speed is not that important for me.

thanks for the feedback

Curious fact about Wi-Di...

It uses 60Ghz EHF waves, which are absorbed by oxygen in the air, so if you want better range, live in a vacuum :D

yes ;-)

i think that's why the pub on the moon failed, it had no 'atmosphere'

60 GHz it will fry my brain
