Vortex VI or Octane III??

Hi,

I currently have an Octane II and I'm looking to upgrade to a new laptop. Is it worth getting the SLI gtx 1080 vortex VI over the single gtx 1080 Octane III? Would say the Octane looks better imo and obviously Octane III is cheaper but would there be a massive performance increase for the money with the SLI?

If you're getting a 1080p screen then stick with the Octane imo. A second GTX 1080 doesn't really add much extra performance at that resolution, and what extra performance it does add is largely superfluous.

Granted those are for desktop 1080s and the laptop ones are a bit weaker, but I think the point still applies.

If you're going for 4k gaming and you have the cash, the Vortex is a candidate. Although bear in mind that the 4k screen options PCS have for their laptops at the moment aren't gsync.

Tbf I wouldn't mind just playing most games at high graphic settings, 1080p at 60 fps. Plus I'm not sure on the refresh rates of the 4k panels but I take it the 1080p panels are only 60hz anyway? The Octane 3 will be a massive performance increase over my Octane 2 with a gtx 970m gpu.

Octane III 1080p panel is 75hz.

Personally I went with the Octane. The Vortex wasn't even on the radar for me as it's more of an elitist purchase than anything IMO. The Octane was overkill for me but I simply wanted it. I wouldn't swap for a dual 1080 Vortex if offered right now, although I would truly love to put one through its paces :D

Yeah that's what I was thinking lol the vortex is for an elite gamer and even then would probably be cheaper to go for a desktop SLI. I've also read that SLI's aren't worth it as support isn't that great. Saw a comment on one forum saying that it works fine for about a year then devs just stop updates for it or something? Do prefer the look of the new Octane 3 too especially over the Vortex though I do like the lighting on the lid of the Vortex not that you'd see it while gaming though lol.

What is the performance like on the Octane and what cpu do you have? I'm looking to get it with the I7 6700k 4.0 ghz cpu, gtx 1080 gpu, 16 gb of ram (Ik that amount of ram is overkill but I also use photoshop and do a bit of 3D modelling so I like the extra RAM there just in case)

The spec is in my sig :)

It's pretty remarkable for a laptop to be honest. When you're posting Firemark scores that will beat most desktops it's a pretty good feeling :)

So it is lol. That's pretty mad if it's betting most desktops. Have you had any trouble with temps? Read on PCSforums some people having issues with CPU needing to be undervolted.

Yeah, it was my thread you posted in with the tips etc :D

Not actually seen that thread lol was another one but basically said the same thing about putting the fan profile to overclock. Take it you've had no issues since changing to that profile? I've also got a cooling stand for my Octane 2 though fans no longer work on it well it's the USB cable that has broken fans should still work fine though it is just for a 15 inch laptop not a 17 inch. I've been thinking about a cooling system for a laptop, have you ever seen the vids on youtube of homemade air conditioners? They just fill a box with ice cubes and have a fan attached to one side and then an exhaust tube the other side and so it just blows out the colder air that is inside the box. I was thinking if you used the same concept but with it underneath a laptop cooler then the coolers fans will suck up the colder air into the laptop surly? Though wouldn't wanna use ice for several reasons but mainly because you'd have to keep refilling it would wanna use something like what a fridge uses but smaller

No sorry, I meant the thread that you commented on that I wrote earlier today with the tips and tricks etc. Anyway, I digress...

If you get to the point where you need to make an air conditioner for your laptop then it's time to re-think the laptop :D

I use a laptop stand when gaming with resource hungry games (AAA titles). The rest of the time I can get away with it on my lap, such as now, and even when playing most games it's fine :)

The laptop stand I use doesn't have any fans or anything like that and my temps are absolutely fine. As long as the fans on the laptop are clear when pushing the CPU/GPU there shouldn't be an issue if you undervolt the CPU.
