Just bought myself the WD TV Live box, HDMI cable and cat5e. Will be buying the Synology DS110j at some point in the future too, WD Live box will save me bringing my netbook down each time we want to watch something
Its a video playback thing, the asus and ac ones have a 400mhz realtek cpu - read about it in ur custompc mag I got the wd one with 500mhz. Basically its so i dont have to bring my netbook down and connect it to tv everytime...nos i keep this in, i connect ethernet to it and the box accesses my entire ntwork - all 8 computers, external hdds and memory stick plugged in the bt home hub. You can also stick a usb in the box itself and load ur vids from there. Has a remote and all so no more crawling around on the carpet pressing play on csi and ncis lol. Theres even a forum with custom firmware for it - not sure what advantages are yet, will cross that bridge later, probs not as beneficial as CFW for the PSP.
Download station, dld off rapidshare etc, torrent (legal files only peeps!) , ftp, host your own ftp server, also host up to 30 websites, something im v interested in 800mhz cpu in the synology, 110j has 1 drive bay, max 2tb, 210j, 2 drive bays, raid, 4tb max.
There is one version that controls security cams too.
Another frickin useful feature: suppose u head to work / school / uni and forget a file...if u use the synology as ur network drive and hav ur docs on there, not to woory, download the file by accessing ur synology through ur browser...
iplayer would be something that would come on the wd tv live box, the synology is seperate, u need both atm wd live as YT i expect iplayer may be added in another firmware update or even custom fw the synology cpu is for its server jobs.
Partly due to it not being optimised for codecs, partly due to it not having any display out. I made a new amazon acc to get prime for 1 month again lol so i get the wd tv, antenna relocate, 10m ethernet, 5m ethrnet, hdmi cable on sat, hopefully before my flu jab...
and ye ill put pics, and when i get synology at xmas, ill try hosting a minecraft server on 6560kbps downstream, 448kbps upstream, SCORE!
Update: So ive got it all setup now, I can push my files over from any PC on the network to the WD TV live, i've inserted a WD passport in there atm but ill be putting my 16gb flash drive in soon.
One thing I noticed if anyone buys one, in order NOT to experience the "Network Error" drive no longer found issue when copying files 300mb or bigger, the drive must be formatted in NTFS for osme odd reason, and it would appear to only need doing if youre pushing files to the drive, i.e. I pulled files off my 2GB GAT32 in my bt home hub without a problem, but pushing files back to it gave me issues.
Also there is some Samba issue with Vista/7... , NTLMv2 isnt supported so you need to do this:
and set: Send LM & NTLM -- use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Apart from that, it workes great, our Sony Bravia only goes up to 720p, 1080i, and 1080i on the WD box even though it was ettable, didnt do anything, but 720p is ample seeing as my vids are in 'xVID.LOL' format anyway......
I also tried streaming from myc omputers, from the box, that worked flawlessly, even through a 5metre tehernet cable going into a home hub, coming back out, entering a homeplug system, coming back out, travelling down a 10metre ethernet again, entering a Belkin Wireless Router, exiting as Wifi and entering my computer - no lag whatsoever, very impressed!
I've had one of these for a while, great little box. there are a few niggles though and the new 1.0.4 firmware update has mixed reviews though, always worth waiting a little while.
I purely use it with an external HDD via an Onkyo HTX-22HD.
I linked it up to my Synology diskstation now. WOrks a treat, epsecially with the iphone app (WD TV Live remote) the remote is too titchy for my liking.
