Well this is annoying :(

This morning, when I woke up my computer, there was something 'not right', nothing I could put my finger on though, just 'not right'. I decided that turning it off and back on again was the right thing to do, so that's what I did. A restart.
My computer rebooted fine, going by the post beep and then the other tones I usually get when it boots up. But my monitor screen stayed black.
So I waited for a bit, wiggled my mouse around, which usually wakes up my monitor, nothing, tapped the space bar, nothing, left it quite some time, tried both again, nothing.
The monitor power light had come on, steady 'on' light but changed to pulsing 'standby' light after the usual length of time of no input.

I did a bad thing, switched my computer off at the power switch on the back, left it for an hour, switched it back on and hit the power button on the front.
My computer powered up and booted, completely as normal, single post beep, various tones, as normal, but my monitor screen is still black. And I noticed there was no little white square which has 3440 x 1440p, Display Port, no input, in it. It pops up when my monitor powers up. Monitor power light had come on in 'on', then gone to standby again. So I pulled the Display Port cable out, and plugged it back in again, both from my monitor and computer. Wiggled my mouse and hit space bar, still nothing.
So I switched off my computer again, with the power switch on the back :( yes, I know. But if I can't switch it off through windows, because I can't see where to click, I don't know of any other way. I also switched off my multi socket, which powers my computer and all accessories which need computer input. Went out and walked up West Lomond with a friend, then into Falkland for a coffee and returned home.
Powered everything up, and noticed my when my monitor powered up I had the Gigabyte logo front and centre and the HDMI logo bottom right. Then the little white square for display size etc appeared too. But that was it. No Windows start up picture, just a black screen. But my monitor is clearly working.
Anyway, I remembered I'd received an HDMI cable , along with the display port cable, so after trying the unplug-plug in thing again, and trying different display port sockets, to no avail, I swapped out the display port cable and put in my hdmi cable. Wiggled my mouse, and got the Windows start up screen.
Deep Joy 🙂 I can now use it.
So the first thing I've done is post this 😀

So. Can anyone tell me why my computer has switched from Display Port output to HDMI output?

I dont think I did anything to set Display Port output on first using it. I just plugged the Display Port cable in at both ends, and everything worked.
I've also posted a help query on the Gigabyte site this morning. But haven't had a reply yet.

Simon, bring up the monitors OSD and check what the monitor inputs is set to, normally it should be set on auto

Aha! Yes, of course. That'll be tomorrows job.
We have to plug in a usb cable to access the OSD if I remember correctly. I know I did to check/update the firmware when I got it. And I think I wanted to check something on the OSD some time ago, but didn't bother because of this. But everything seemed to be working, so it was only 'out of interest' then. This is a W T H situation 🙂

You don’t need any cable to access the OSD, just use the buttons on the monitor.

That monitor doesn't have an "auto" option for source..however, you can still check without using a cable:

the control button being your power on button (strange to see a monitor with only one button on it)

On my Alienware I can get the input source up with the PC off, but the PC needs to be booted to access any of the other OSD menus - so I can't even trigger an OLED refresh unless I have the PC on

Ah, OK, thanks people 🙂

I've already got that manual somewhere on my computer FigmentOfYourImagination, but I couldn't access it until I got a working screen.
As that was fairly late in the evening, I left it until today. That photo was a great help though, thanks 🙂

I'd forgotten that, about access to the OSD Spyder. I've now changed it back to Display Port and plugged that cable back in.
I'm cooking with gas now 😀 (HDMI cable returned to storage, I'd better inform Gigabyte seeing as I raised a help query)

Which leaves the question, why did it change from DisplayPort to HDMI???
It has been on DisplayPort since I got it. There's nothing near that little Control button, so nothing which could have changed it accidentally.
I didn't access the OSD through software, so couldn't have accidentally changed it that way.
There was something 'not right' about my computer, which prompted me to do a restart. I don't know what it was, there were no real symptoms, just a feeling. And after the restart, black screen, as in my first post.

Any ideas? Or is this 'just one of those anomolies', sent to try us occasionally??
If it is, I failed the test :(

Recon it's just one of those things

I've done a Malwerbytes scan, which reported 0 problems.
I scanned it several days ago, but as "There was something 'not right' about my computer", I thought it won't do any harm to check again.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean 'they aren't out to get you'. 😀
