In general apple stuff tends to be overpriced and after looking at the apple store and configuring an identical mini PC from PCS, the PCS mini PC is about £100 less. £80 for 2GB of RAM? Seriously? It is £11 extra fromPCS!
AND after a 2nd look, i thought it said +12 for a 750GB HDD. I almost choked when i saw it was £120 more!
So what kind of spec were you looking at? Have you thought about buying from PCS or do you need it to run an apple OS for some reason?
I need apple os because it comes with garage band and macs tend to have very good sound quality (Skrillex and others like Noel Gallagher use them out of choice to produce music) and my dad has a mac book pro so I can use thunderbolt for data transfers that would take ages over wifi or usb2.
I would buy it with the I7 but only with 4gb of ram, as it is just a case of slotting more in, and I would get the model with the improved graphics in it
I admittedly do love the look of Mac's over laptops, but the price difference between the two is just absurd. I'd go for the laptop over a Mac, simply on cost
If your dead set on an apple computer then i wont try and change your mind, my main gripe is the cost for what your getting. The performance would be identical, and if sound is your main worry then it's not much trouble to order an upgraded soundcard or get an external one with your Windows PC. I have a feeling alot of people, even the successful people like Skrillex and the like use them is because they are cool, not for any huge performance advantage.
You will get a very nice machine from apple if your willing to pay for it, it just has that apple premium price attached. If you have the money, want the apple OS and don't plan to game then sure get one and i doubt you will be disappointed. I only made 1 apple purchase, the Iphone 3GS and really can't fault it, i do like the way it works even if it was a bit over priced when i bought it! So i can see where your coming from!
Yeah i almost fell off my chair at the price of an upgrade from a 500GB to a 750GB HDD. I thought £12 was VERY resonable, then i seen it had a 0 on the end and almost choked!
price Isn't really an issue and the mini pc's from pcs look a bit on the chunkier side
what I really mean is are there any major flaws in the actual machine?
No issues with the machines as far as im aware, just be careful if you do start digging about inside one of those machines thought. Unlike PCS i doubt apple would honour a warranty on the machine if you have been inside it, even if it's just to fit a couple of RAM sticks. They would most probably tell you your hard drive failed 2 months after you upgraded your RAM because of something you did while you were inside the case.
the bottom is easily removable and ''designed for upgradability'' anyway its a twist pannel to undo the bottom and then you just slot the ram in like you would an sd card
Sorry I probably seem like an awkward 3 year old
what I mean is, apart from price can you point out any obvious flaws in the mac mini ie graphics card is crap ect
Yeah that might be the case, however i just had a quick read through their terms and conditions. They COULD decide any upgrades not performed by an apple certified installer void the warranty if THEY decide to in a nut shell.
Most manufacturers are the same, i wouldn't worry about it too much.
The GPU is crap, yes but because you can't really game on a mac it's not really a consideration.
The rest of the components that do anything are exactly the same as you will find in a PCS mini PC, probably with the exception of the motherboard.
I have no experiance with macs and like the others i object to them just because of the price premium, they work just fine so long as your not a hardcore gamer, thats the one area where they do fall down.
Not sure at all on that one, that my honest answer. The GT 520 can but it's a faster card, so im not going to geuss. Possibly someone else will know for sure, but i have to go to bed now.
