What cpu would you recommend ?

Recently took stock on what I actually do on my current pc and looking at the 5900x and my lack of will for video editing it seems massively overkill on a purely gaming pc which for my next build I would like to aim for.
would like a cpu I would not have to change in the next 5 years anything that stands out or is the 5900x maybe a good future proof (nothing is but somthing I dont have to change out ) currently 1440p but will go 4k in future ? Any opinions on my eternal struggle would be appreciated

Would not be streaming the cpu would purely be for 4k gaming my budget is £3000 just on the desktop so I can pritty much pick any cpu just lack the knowledge and I dont care about having the very best cpu I just want the best gaming cpu without going overboard and paying out for a 5900x if its not really being used to its full potential

I would also look at fitting 32GB memory.

what I have seen in a few reviews / decent benchmark checks between 16gb v 32GB is that FPS remain fairly constant between each but the CPU % utilisation is less with 32GB.

I thinking going forward, the Gen3 architecture coupled with Nvidia API for PCIe 4.0 there will be better load sharing.

as above I think the 5800x is a bit of a sweet spot.

I am in the 16GB at moment, however for Sims and mods, then 32GB does seem slightly better approach.

if someone is potentially flying sims, modded games, etc, then 32GB to me is better approach.

Saying all that RTX IO API and Windows direct storage, supposedly cuts out the CPU and RAM...


for me £100 was my ‘a meal out for two’ and is usually how I justify things in my man maths.

£400 is a month of eating out once a week.

this has meant we have saved a fortune since lockdown using my basic man maths.

Just go for the 5900X, 4 extra cores for ~43 when you would be paying ~244 for 2 cores going from a 5600X to a 5800X?

As we go into the future applications will only become more and more tailored to using more cores, in that sense having more cores would benefit you more.

At the moment the 5600X would probably do you for gaming only, given that Zen 3 CPUs generally perform around the same for games - unless there's a major change in the utilization of additional cores in the future then the best cost-performance CPU for games is the 5600X.

The 5800x would be my minimum for gaming if budget allows but I totally agree with @longdog42 its currently at an incredibly poor value proposition that doesn’t make it worth the cost.

The 6 core of the 5600x for me though is just too little. While it performs well now, more and more games are now leveraging more cores.

Thank you all chaps much to think about theres no real happy medium in this tho I wont place my order till end of feb march im still leaning towards the 5900x was looking at 5600x but feel like its lacking at 6 cores would be good for short term and for the price of the 5800x may aswell just go 5900x its a shame intel had such a fail with there last offering dosent feel competitive but thank you all for your opinions they really help !

32gb for me play heavily modded games alot but agree for normal gaming 16gb is the sweet spot

I agree the lighting does look good im not dead against it but would be under a desk on a caddy so would not be on display anyways plus when im gaming I tend to have my eyes on the monitor not the case I failed you papa

I know your cable management will be top drawer, though. Very much looking forward to your setup photos, you might undo some of the mental trauma I endured seeing the spaghetti junction under the desk of @Nursemorph 😱

That cable, Martin, was put there by the bods at PC Specialist, not by myself. It's literally the only complaint I could make against the system they put together for me.

And yes, it's sorted. My adhesive remover arrived and did exactly what was asked of it, the light strip has now been nudged a bit further up the case and the wire is stowed away nicely out of sight. I can now relax when I'm sat in front of my PC
