If you refer to other models like the vortex it is likely to be because of a different chassis, different motherboard, different cooling and features.

Is it possible to change the panel with an IPS one after purchase?

the alterations to the connections may not fit to chassis. and for what is worth can be a costly modification. If the screen bothers you so much you can always pick up a cheap external monitor that has a decent display for cheap, thats if you intend to use this in one location mostly :p

Quickly looking in the internet, yes. The stock screen is an AUO B156HTN03.6 and can be replaced by any screen compatible with MSI GS60, Lenovo Y50, or Asus Q501LA:

LTN156HL01-102 (Samsung SCD324C) : IPS Matte, 16ms response (101 for glossy)
AUO B156HAN01.2 : IPS Matte, 25ms response (1.1 for glossy)

I should be getting this laptop next week and I didn't look up the screen specs. Probably it won't bother me much as I am used to a lousy screen, but obviously this laptop deserves a good one to take advantage of its gaming power. The screen change, though, probably voids the warranty.
