Will a 1080 card be ok?

Hi all

Like many I'm waiting for a new build with 5900x and a 3080 card. My old gaming machine MoBo died last November, so I'm on an even older machine for the time being. I recently got an email from PCS about the GPU stock state, and being delayed up to around March and beyond date. At the moment, I'm sort of happy to way -- I'm currently on 40 pre-prod days) , but I replied to their email and got this response when I asked how quick I could get the order if I opted for NO GPU:

I'm still concerned about the other components though (1000w PSU etc.) But I was wondering... Will my old 1080 card actually be OK in this build? I'm not really up with the tech changes over the last few years, I suspect it will, but thought I would ask. I can always get the 3080 later down the line when it's better stock.

A 1080 will work fine (as in it'll function etc.), it'll just be the weakest component (which I think you already know) the 1000W PSU isn't going to be pumping out 1000W into the GPU so thats not an issue (if it was something you're concerned about for example).

Thanks, thought that might be the case. At least I could set it up and start installing some games. In my old pc the 1080 was the best component, but once I get a new mobo for that the 1080 can go back in it.

Good to know about the PSU, was also more of a concern about stock levels too. -- Just noticed the above spec doesn't show the amendments I've made to it since the original. Couple of minor tweaks.

I have my old 1060 in my machine, waiting for 3060 / 3070 side of things clearing up a bit (and moving house).

my key thing is being able to at least play games, rather than simply waiting and waiting and waiting ......

get it built without a gfx card and then get your own, or even use upgrade option once your rig is delivered.

Given it's a gaming system, I would adjust the hard drive configuration slightly (assuming you haven't changed anything there). I'd go with a 512gB main drive (say the Firecuda) for Windows, applications etc and then have a separate M.2 drive (say the PCS variant) for your games etc. Makes it much easier if you ever need to re-install Windows as it saves reinstalling games...also saves messing around with partitions and whatnot

Thanks, this is one of the changes I made (not shown above) 2 x m.2 drives - 500gb fast thing for windows and the 2tb one shown for games. also a 1000w PSU as well, and they have increased the cooler to the better one as well.

Thats the main thing... currently playing old games on a gtx 740.... Think I'll make that change.

Just had a thought, not being a Win 10 user, will I have issues when I switch the card from 1080 to 3080. As I believe win10 is more hardware activation now.

CPU, Motherboard, not had a problem with Graphics cards.

The main thing to remember is a full clean driver install when you swap cards over.

Great. was hoping that was the answer, not had issues in the past with my win 8.1 pc when I swapped the card, but wasn't sure with win 10. Yep full clean driver installer will be done.

Just use Nvidia Experience Custom, assuming no monitor speaker deselect sound and click on clean install.
