Windows 7 rather than Windows 10?

Does anyone with newer spec laptops/desktops run Win7 instead of 10? As much as I can just about live with Windows 10 I really don't like it that much and I absolutely hate the big brother aspects of the OS.

When the new laptop arrives I'm thinking of putting in Win7 and taking out 10 (still leaving it as part of the build in case I change my mind).

Has anyone done such a thing? How did you get on with it? Any benchmarks to show any potential pitfalls?

Thanks

I think some of the newer laptops may well have big issues with Win7, some of this is to do with available drivers from the manufacturer, and the hotkey stuff.

I realise this is a bit vague and I'm not sure which laptop chassis (if any) do still fully support Win7

I think that the new laptops don't support Windows 7 and any drivers available are for Windows 10.

I personally don't think you'll have any issues other than some minor things. Most of the hardware can be used via the standardised built in drivers for Windows, a few of the components may offer some more advanced features with their own drivers but basic compatibility for keyboard, mouse etc can all be provided by the OS.

I think I'll give it a go just to see how it runs. It'll be worth some time even just as an exercise.

Thanks :)

If the additional data that Windows 10 collects worries you there are two things you can do.

1. Ensure that all the selectable options in Settings that relate to collected data are turned off. You can PM me if you'd like to know what these are.

2. For those telemetry items that are not directly user configurable there is at least one safe tool (from a trusted source) that allows you to turn all these off too. I won't post a link or the name because I'm not absolutely certain whether it contravenes the forum policy but if you PM me I'll share it with you.

These two options remove all the 'Big Brother' aspects of Windows 10.

I went around the doors sorting out my previous Win10 configuration. I just genuinely prefer the look and operation of Windows7. Don't get me wrong, I'm not adverse to using Win10 with the telemetry all turned off but I would simply rather Win7 as long as it doesn't compromise the performance of the laptop.

Even just as an exercise it'll be fun.

BTW, there is a lot of the software spilling over to Win7 also. There are various ways to take care of all that side of things too. Thankfully they're all coming through the windows update so it's worthwhile being cautious of what updates to install :)

"Microsoft has come under fire for pushing the Windows 10 upgrade on consumers, and for a number of glitches in the supposedly simplified Windows 10. These have included computers being unable to upgrade with SD cards in SD slots and apps being deleted without warning. One man who left his PC to upgrade overnight woke up to find his private collection of pornography being used as a slideshow which was spotted by his wife."

Personally I would never advise anyone to upgrade a system to Windows 10, IMO that's just asking for problems. I always recommend that people do a clean install of Windows 10 (which means making a bootable USB or ISO with the media creation tool, rather than upgrading in place).

I don't think the "free upgrade" was allowed as a download though? People were left without a choice, other than forking out £80+ for the OS.

The way it was done was definitely very bad. People waking up to find their PC upgrading or running a new OS or even broken. Wouldn't be surprised if someone government somewhere fines them for poor conduct and potentially harming businesses by breaking PCs.

You can download iso images for win 10. Done it many times.

Indeed, the media creation tool (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10) lets you make a bootable installation device (USB stick or DVD) and as long as there is a qualifying version of Windows on the computer it will clean install.

Cheers guys, I didn't realise it was so simple with Win10. Good that it is..... my eyebrow is raised about how that system works though :D
