windows 8 Lenova - stuck in a loop

hi, my wife's laptop is stuck in a loop after trying to stop rubbish updates slowing her pc down. Everything was ok and this was successful, everything was running smoothly, then wen the pc was switched on this morning it says, almost immediately after switching on, 'Failure configuring windows features, reverting changes, do not turn off your computer'...

...and it just sits there indefinitely, we have left it for hours and hours, and still no change. The mouse pointer moves so it's not locked up.

I was ok with windows up to XP, and could normally get out of most problems, but don't even know where to start with windows 8..

any help would be appreciated...

Do you have a windows 8 disk handy, any other 'recovery' disks with the machine itself?

Basically first thing I'd try is booting from a windows 8 disk and trying to restore to an earlier time with the system restore function. It sounds like a windows update went bad to me, it should have done whatever it has to do already if you have left it for hours and nothing has happened.

Are you able to hit the keys for launching in safe mode before the error appears?
