just got my eagerly anticipated vortex iv with various bells and whistles, one of which is an msata drive 120 gig intel fast jobby that shows only a capacity of 105 gig hmmm....

anyways my main point is the pc specialist flat windows install is taking up 70 gigs of space and I don't know why???

70 Gb sounds high. Here is a snapshot of WinDirStat from my 8 month old Optimus V which has a 120Gb SSD. I use the hibernate function and I have 16 Gb of RAM (the amount matters). I've expanded the second folder down which has both the hibernation file and the page file just so you can see.

windows was about 40 gig and the hibernate and pagefile taking the rest

i can see why now the pagefile and hibfile is acording to ram and i have 16gig and they can be disabled

but why is windows 40 gig? the website for win7 says requirements are 20 gig for 64bit

The shortfall of 6Gb is a recovery image stored on the drive which is hidden from Windows. If you right click "This PC", select "Manage" then click "Storage" and finally "Disk Management" you'll see the hidden partitions. Here's another screenshot from my system so you can compare.

As you can see the drive shows up as 111.67Gb, matching what Vanthus says but only 104.77Gb is available to Windows in the form of drive C:

As for the size of your Windows folder, WinDirStat shows mine as 15.6Gb so your 40Gb folder sounds very high. Here is another screen from WinDirStat but with the Windows folder expanded so you can again compare.

Also with 16Gb of RAM you don't need such a large page file. depending on what your doing. It's best to let Windows manage the size of the page file. Have you set it to match your RAM manually? Have a quick google. There's tons of advice on managing the size of your page file out there but again I personally think it's better to let Windows decide.

20gb is probably the minimum size based on minimum system specs. The fact you have a lot of ram will mean a higher page file, hibernation and swap file. Good article here on minimising space required :
