My first hard drive is a 1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm) would it be advantageous to have a partition say of 250MB for the operating system?

what is the advantage of having solid state drive say40gb,as opposed to a 1TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE,then making a partition on the 1tb drive for the os?
