    PCSPECIALIST 11800H or 5900HX (Recoil 15.6")

I believe there is an option it the BIOS to completely power off the Nvidia GPU so it runs off the Vega 8 iGPU. Can you confirm this? I believe it's under Advanced > Display Settings (something like that).

    PCSPECIALIST 11800H or 5900HX (Recoil 15.6")

Glad I stumbled across this post. I'm in the same predicament at the moment - trying to decide between the 5900HX and the 11800H. I'm leaning heavily towards the 5900HX right now. Would the AMD have better battery life if running in "iGPU" mode ("office mode")? Do the fans also run quieter on...

I have asked PCS again, this is the reply: Will update here once I have the laptop.

PCSPECIALIST Considering Recoil V 15.6 - can Nvidia GPU be completely powered down?

Are you saying it's not possible on the Recoil 15.6 inch with AMD 5900HX and Nvidia RTX 3070? It is possible on other PCS laptops, like the Ionico 17 Hmmmm... Now I'm anxious again, really need this setting. I'll contact PCS support again, will see what they say. I was very clear when asking...

    PCSPECIALIST Recoil 15 Questions

I won't be using Windows, so I only need to know if this option is available in the BIOS. I wrote to PCS support today, and they said: Based on this, I placed an order for the Recoil 15.6 inch with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and RTX 3070. Hopefully it'll be delievered next week. The first thing...

    PCSPECIALIST Recoil 15 Questions

Hello Recoil 15 owners! I'm thinking about buying this laptop too (with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and RTX 3070). I just have one question: is there an option to select iGPU Only in the BIOS? This option is available on the PCS Ionico with an Intel CPU: (under Advanced > Display Mode). Does...

PCSPECIALIST Considering Recoil V 15.6 - can Nvidia GPU be completely powered down?

Hi, I'm considering purchasing the Recoil 15.6 with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900H and Nvidia RTX 3070. Does anyone know if it's possible to completely power off the Nvidia GPU (so the unit runs off completely off the integrated GPU on the Ryzen 9 5900HX)?

PCSPECIALIST Recoil 15.6" Linux No Touchpad

Did you end up getting the touchpad working? I'm thinking about ordering this laptop (with the AMD CPU), will be running Arch Linux (so latest kernels etc). It has been a while since I've bought a new laptop, I have a couple of questions about Linux on this unit: Can you completely power down...

PCSPECIALIST Any AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 Linux compatibility issues?

Thanks @jimmy1. I was even thinking of just going for an i7-10700KF (to play it safe), but I've been fascinated by Ryzen. What motherboard do you have? What RAM modules do you use? I'm running Arch too :)

    PCSPECIALIST 15.6" INITIA AMD - Working 99%

Just a stab in the dark here (wild guess), but perhaps add acpi_osi="!Windows 2015" to your boot params? So in your /etc/default/grub, you'd have something like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2015\"" Then run: sudo update-grub Then reboot.

PCSPECIALIST Any AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 Linux compatibility issues?

I'm still running an ancient Intel i7 4790 in my desktop, and have decided it's time to take the plunge and buy something modern. I'm considering a desktop with an AMD 3800X, 5800X, 3900X or 5900X. Is anyone running Linux on any of the above? If so, are there any compatibility issues?

PCSPECIALIST Are there any 2K laptop options?

I'm pretty sure they used to - when I bought my Defiance II, I'm pretty sure there was a 2560x1440 option. It's a shame, personally I think 2560x1440 is the sweet spot on a 15.6 inch panel.

PCSPECIALIST Are there any 2K laptop options?

I bought a Defiance II laptop from PCS many years ago, and have been extremely happy with it. I recall having the option to configure it with a 2K panel, but decided to go with FHD instead. I'm now looking for a laptop with a 2K panel, but haven't seen any configuration options for PCS laptops...

PCSPECIALIST New to PCS and Linux

I have an old Defiance II from PCS. I absolutely love it, and it runs Linux very well (for the most part). However, when I first purchased it, installing Linux wasn't exactly straight forward - many things needed to be done to get everything working. Today, however, I can basically install the...

PCSPECIALIST More good news from AMD

They don't seem to be available from PCSpecialists at this time. There's no option in the CPU dropdown for a 3950x. Also, from what I understand, there's a significant price jump between the 3900x and 3950x?

PCSPECIALIST More good news from AMD

I'm currently in the market for a new desktop rig, and I'm currently eye-balling the Ryzen 9 3900x. 12 cores (24 threads), 105 watt TDP, 32GB of RAM for just under £900! I have my own GPU and don't need Windows installed as I use Linux. I'm completely blown away by how reasonably priced such a...

    PCSPECIALIST Ubuntu 19.04

I thought I'd take Kubuntu 19.04 for a spin, and have just installed it on my Defiance II. Installation was fairly painless, almost everything seems to be working okay. I'm using the Nvidia 430 driver. In Intel GPU mode, it's idling at around 10W (which is great - better than previous...

PCSPECIALIST Installing Ubuntu 16.10 on the Defiance II

The following are the steps I used to install Ubuntu 16.10 (and Kubuntu 16.10) on my Defiance II: 1. Make sure the GPU is set to DISCRETE in the BIOS. 2. Boot from the Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) installation media (press F7 repeatedly when you see the "PC Specialist" logo). 3. Press the 'e' key the...
