Really good to see the effort AMD are putting in these days, especially for 'nix users: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ryzen-3000-BIOS-Update-Good
Nice to see AMD quickly address the problem with trying to run some 'nix distros on their new CPUs: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=AMD-Releases-Linux-Zen2-Fix
Anyone thinking of a build with the new Ryzens and 'nix may want to wait a while until some initial problems are sorted: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ryzen-3700x-3900x-linux&num=2
This has been around a long time so I guess most of you know about it but I have only just started using it and it has been OK so far, it is certainly nice to have a free cross-platform raster graphics editor and I think it is worth trying: https://krita.org/en/
Would appreciate a bit of info from anyone dual-booting 'nix and Windows. Does Windows play nicely as the second OS of a dual-boot or would I need to install W10 first and then put the 'nix on after.
Anyone else had a look at this: https://librem.one/#mce_1
It is a paid for webmail and chat, plus other stuff but not expensive and looks quite decent. I am thinking of giving it a go.
Latest Ubuntu upgrade has not been out long enough to look at properly, just wondered if anyone had any first impressions. From a cosmetic viewpoint it is good to see their artwork for the main screen is still good. The Cosmic Cuttlefish is still my favourite and was not sure to expect from...
There have been some issues with Gparted not launching on Ubuntu, especially 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish. If you have installed it but it fails to launch run the following from a terminal and that should fix it.

As a result of a little windfall am thinking of having a PC after years of using laptops and could do with some advice. The spec below was thrown together just to have a starting point to work on.
Uses will be audio and video work, plus GIMP and publishing software for newsletters etc, there...
Note sure if the games are decent value on here but I was able to pick up Window 7 for eight quid, have done a thorough check and am sure it is legal: https://www.mmoga.co.uk/
Not sure whether this is particularly good or not as not a gamer but thought this about the SteamOS may be of interest: https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=showheadline&story=6628
Have had my Octane V for a couple of weeks now and very pleased with it, even more than my original Octane. Luckily I found someone to take the original off me as I could not really justify replacing a machine that was still working perfectly but the new i7s were very tempting and by getting rid...
The Crew 2, whatever that may be is currently being given away free by PCS with certain Samsung drives. I am not a gamer and more than happy to have a new Octane coming tomorrow so if there are any forum regulars (more than 100 Reps or a newbie who has provided some good info and not had time to...
I realise this has been asked many times before but wondered if there is anything new about in laptop cooling trays for 17" computers. I do not like buying these online as there are too many that say up to 17" but are often hardly big enough for a 15", so if anyone knows of a decent one I would...
Has anyone any experience of using WINE and how reliable is it. I have heard mixed reports but never used it but now be forced to or buy a Microsoft Licence just to use a few programs for a short time.
Unfortunately I do not know what software it will be at the moment, am trying to find out but...
I am speccing a machine up and have the choice of 4x4GB or 2x8GB RAM sticks, Corsair Vengance DDR4 3000MHz. Is there any noticeable performance difference between the two options or any other reason why one is better. My preference at the moment is 2x8GB to leave room for adding more if needed.
