Ok, I've solved it. They are standard Sata ports, pointing towards the edge of the motherboard. However, the backplate supporting the motherboard has a lip which partially obscures the port, I've now managed to plug in a Sata cable with a bit of careful leverage, so my problem is solved...
Thanks, but if you look at the manual and the images that I sent, you'll see that the two side Sata ports on this motherboard do not take the standard Sata L-shaped plug. I might have to get on the Asus to find out what these are.
