0% charging

I am new in the forum having had no issues with my Optimus Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080) which I got in Sept 2015 until recently.

Main issue is that for some reason now the battery shows alternately as 0% charging or 100% Fully charged.

It seems to decide randomly to hibernate - as I was typing this it went to sleep. The power options are set to Never when plugged in.

Do I need to get a replacement battery?

Have you got HWMonitor installed, it can give you some basic battery health info but it sounds like the battery is deeeeeead. Will the laptop boot at all with the mains disconnected?

7 years life for a battery isnt bad at all tbh

It sure doesn't sound very good.

Is it OK when plugged in?
... when it is plugged in it reports either 0% or 100%, but goes into hibernation at random intervals. Maybe a coincidence but there was a Windows 10 update round about the time this started. Cumulative update 1903.

I installed HW monitor and it is reporting a battery charge level of 100% though the wear level is 96%.

Ok hang on,

So the laptop wont turn on when it's on battery power alone = Dead battery backed up by HWMonitor info @ 96% wear rate. Just checking that the machine is 100% running fine when powered by the mains? Sure you've said that it doesnt work with the battery removed?

You should be able to find a spare battery in your account page (if PCS still stock it), if not look at the part numbers on the battery and google it.

Just to clarify I guess the battery is pretty much dead - up to 99% wear.

The pc won't start on battery alone ie with power lead unplugged.

It will run with the power lead in but behaves oddly with random hibernation.

I have now removed the battery and so far the pc is running ok.

I am not sure i will bother replacing the battery as I use the laptop as a desktop replacement, never has to run on battery nowadays. PC Specialist can supply a new one but c £80. Can find for similar price or cheaper online but the supplier reviews are not encouraging.

I will review in a while when I am sure I can run with no battery ok.

Thanks 4 all yr help.
