Are you in a hurry for the system? It's likely worthwhile holding off for the 9800X3D if you can. Rumours are it's due the end of the month.

If not then I would opt for an X870 build with a 7800X3D to get the best gaming performance.

Regardless of which way you go, you do not want to touch the 4090. It's an exorbitant amount of money for very little performance increase over the 4080 Super.

What's made you land on the 4090?

Which monitor is it? Have you purchased it? 4k 144hz is fairly standard nowadays, a top end build would warrant a top end monitor. Oled or true HDR should be on the list, or something Super Ultrawide for the ultimate immersion.

I would agree with the above about the 4090. I run a 4090 at 4k120 and even running something like Starfield at ultra settings and it is not even remotely close to being maxed out. It is definitely not worth the extra £800 it costs over the 4080S, it wouldn't even be worth it at £200

Just to respond. I'm not trashing the 4090 at all, it's an absolute monster of a card.... but with the 5090 on the horizon (and the 5080 that will smash the 4090) it's just not a sensible purchase at this time.

If you want to be cutting edge and you're willing to pay for it, the top tier card is a fair enough choice...... it's just not the right timing to opt for the 4090 as the difference doesn't add up for how short a period it'll hold any sway over the tier below. The £800 difference is also pretty peak on the price difference as well. I think when released it was around £500. IIRC it ended up around £400 between them at one point which is far more palatable and acceptable when nothing is on the horizon.

As we saw the last time you were on here, your 4090 is being bottlenecked, you're not getting the full performance available.

The useage should always be 100% if there's no CPU bottleneck, and if your system is configured correctly, the X3D chip you have would never give a bottleneck.

Hi

I thought the performance increase was greater from 4080 to 4090, so would 4080 be ok for 4K gaming. The Monitor is LG Ultragear 32 inch.

Thanks all for suggestions, I think you guys may have saved me quite a bit of money, think I will hold out a few weeks and see if 9800X3D is released and pair it with the 4080 super

Thanks

There is a performance increase..... it's just not an £800 performance increase.

The 40 series cards aren't a good outlay right now. Below the 80 series is likely the most sensible money as it tends to be a little while before that range is released. The 5090 will typically be first with the 5080 shortly behind it.

Assuming Parity in costs:

5080 > 4090
5070 > 4080
5060 > 4070

That's very broad, but is typically what is expected between the generations. The 5070, which is going to likely be better than the 4080, will be a good few £100 less.

No matter which 40 series card you purchase you're going to be paying a premium for performance less than what is soon to be released for the same cash.

Thanks for advice guys, gonna hold off for now - think I will look at bulding a system around 5080 when it arrives.

The LG Ultragear is model is 32GR93U.
