5600x to 5800x upgrade

I have a 3.5ish year old pc with the ryzen 5 5600x and a 3070 i bought just after the launches of those parts. I recently have been looking for an upgrade that will essentially future proof for another 4ish years or more.

with the intention of upgrading to a new GPU with the performance (but not current price of) a 4080, id like CPU upgrade. Is a 5600x to R7 5800x worthwhile. My current build has a 750W PSU and according to all calculators, a 750W PSU should work for the equivalent to a 5800x paired with a 4080. In my head it doesnt seem right, but its what all calculators say. Thoughts?

My current CPU cooling is also with a CM masterliquid lite 240 AIO, but i do not know if it would be enough for the 5800x.

Better with the 5800X3D for gaming if that's what your aim is. As above, would need to know the rest of the spec though.

I wouldn't have a 750w PSU near a 4080 unfortunately. Calculators use TDP rather than maximum draw, they can pull double their TDP at times.

This is the order from 3 years ago, i cannot configure due to the old parts PC specialist do not use anymore. change would be 5800x before a GPU upgrade (that may bring a PSU upgrade)

Right but would a 850W most likely be sufficient? Even according to PCS, the total draw of the system would be below 600W. the CPU upgrade would not be used with PCS, i only say the 5800x due to a great deal on amazon at current.

You're not going to get more gaming performance with a 5800X, well I suppose you could but it would be game dependent. The only real upgrade choice is the 5800X3D as the 3D cache brings about a significant jump in performance.

850w would be fine if you opt for an ATX3.x version PSU, going for an old standard or a cheap one is just falling into the same trap unfortunately.

You'll get 320w used by a 4080 on boost, a transient spike will easily surpass 500w on its own. The 5800X will see around 150w max IIRC, you could pull more if you were to use PBO etc to unlock more performance. Typically the rest of the system is considered as 100w. That gives you 570w without a transient spike. Add a 20% headroom (the minimum) and you're just shy of 700w. Again, this is without considering transient spikes which lead to crashing and bluescreen events and would need approx 900w of room to cover. A good 850w PSU would just about manage this, but again I wouldn't fancy it.

Have a look at what Corsair say with regards to recommendations. It's worth keeping in mind that all the recommendations from Corsair are ATX3 based, not ATX2. This is why they say the 750w minimum would be OK but at least 850w or 1000w is recommended.


The modern PSUs have transient spike protection built in. A 750w ATX3.0 PSU is significantly more robust than a 2.4 version (or whatever they were at, I'm unsure).

ATX 3 PSUs are rated at double their rating for short bursts (transient spikes) so a 750w ATX 3 PSU can actually go as high as 1500w

An ATX 2 PSU has no headroom above its rating, so the rating is the peak that’s achievable even under micro bursts
