60 Hz cap on 2nd monitor (capable of 144 Hz)

Hello there hero's.

I just bought a 2nd monitor that is capable of 144 Hz - https://uk.thermaltake.com/tgm-i27fq-gaming-monitor.html

I just used a random HDMI cable I found in a drawer to connect my laptop (almost 4 years old now but still working like a trooper!) to the monitor and the refresh rate is capped at 60 Hz. There are no options above 60 Hz.

This exact question is asked on so many threads online and I'm ashamed to admit I still can't seem to resolve the current issues I have :'( boo me. The things I've tried include...

1. Changing the refresh rate in the monitor itself - but I can't find any options in there to change the refresh rate
2. Trying a UCB-C connection instead of HDMI - when I did this I got a windows error message saying this display option is not supported
3. Display Port Connection - I don't have a display port connection on my laptop.
4. Updating Nvidia Control Panel - In my Nvidia control panel I only have "3D settings" and no way to look at the display
   

Is my laptop capable of putting out a refresh rate above 60 Hz? Another thing I can't figure out is what generation of HDMI port I have. It's not in my spec and I can't see any writing on the laptop casing itself.

You guys have gotten me out of some holes before, please work your magic again xoxoxo. Praise the sun.

In Windows, search for Display Settings, then open Advanced Display. About halfway down you'll see a 'Choose refresh rate' box with a drop-down. What does it say on that menu?

It only gives me two options - 60 Hz and 59.94 Hz

For completeness sake, here are all the ports on my laptop as per the spec:

I think that motherboard/iGPU may only support HDMI 1.4, so you're limited to 60hz at 1440p (or 30hz at 4k).

Displayport 1.4 port/cable should support about double those refresh rates (as the Intel spec sheet says 60hz at 4k).

There are basically 3 areas that have to support the resolution and refresh rate:

Output Port (laptop / PC) - Cable - Input Port (monitor)

The display can only show the weakest of those 3.

The GTX1650 is nowhere near powerful enough to run high refresh 1440p anyway, even if it could support higher refresh rates.
