Hi all, what do people think of this spec with regards to it being a properly cooled and future proof spec?
I will get the monitor elsewhere.

Usage will be for graphic design / multimedia / software development with some gaming.

Honestly it's not a great build. It would be OK, don't get me wrong, but it's not the best way of spending your money. A couple of key questions. First, what is your budget? Your build seems to come out to around £3600 -- is this the limit? Second, are you sure you need 256GB of RAM?

The better options, I think, are either a build based on the Ryzen 9 5950X or the Threadripper 3960X, depending on whether you really need that much memory. Both would offer a better build than the Intel 10980XE. (Your build also needs better power, cooling and storage, but let's get to that when we've looked at the main question of which platform is best.)

Nope..............

Give this a read

Couple of questions what monitor will you eventually be purchasing resolution wise ? And what programs will you be using to feel the need to have a 18 core cpu ?

No I'm not sure I need 256GBs of RAM but I have a €4500 budget so I have a lot to play with. I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck and have something that will go for a good number of years.

Same for the CPU. I will look more at AMD. I haven't bought a new machine since 2014 so perhaps I need to revise my views re the processor!
Monitor will be something in the €400 region, I was looking at a 4K Ultra HD with 3840x2160 resolution

I did think 256GB seemed unlikely (for context, that amount of RAM literally costs more than my entire PC).

Could you go through each of the uses you've outlined (graphic design, multimedia, software development, gaming) and say what software/games you'll be using and how intensive it is? And would your total budget then be €4900? And, finally, are you in Ireland? If not, can you say where you are?

With all due respect I can afford a 5950x 3090 combo but would be a absolute waste for my needs im not sure why you would need 256gb of ram unless you were going to to have hundreds of google webpages open at the same time with a few virtual machines and and rendering projects going tho this may be a learning exsperience for me as im not aware how much ram large scale moddeling projects use ?

Graphic design and multimedia - Adobe Creative Suite. I'm not too concerned about the software development requirement, I'm running an Oracle DB and they hog resources, so I want to make sure I have enough ram and a big processor. I know I'm over specifying and that's the idea - I'm not looking for a system that meets my requirements just for 2021, I'm looking for a system that can still meet my requirements in 2027. Gaming-wise, I will be playing Forza and Project Cars.
And finally, yes I'm in Ireland.

would it be worth waiting for DDR5 ? if your looking towards 2027 ?

Yeah, it will probably be next year before DDR5 is properly available in the mainstream, and much longer than that before it's ubiquitous.

Let's start by suggesting a monitor. 4K monitors aren't the best option right now in all honesty: most are 60Hz, and the higher refresh rate options are ludicrous money (and mostly seem to be out of stock anyway). I'd suggest UWQHD (3440x1440) 144Hz like the AOC CU34G2X (£450 in the UK, no idea about anywhere else). It's a curved monitor, which will be great for gaming but isn't everyone's taste in particular for content creation.

This means we can go for the RTX 3070 as the ideal graphics card (better for Adobe stuff than the AMD equivalents). We can go slightly luxury with the 5900X (and Strix X570): 12 cores is great for the work you'll be doing. 64GB of RAM is enough for most Creative Suite workflows. We can also go for a super-luxury storage configuration, with a silly-fast 980 Pro as the boot drive, a 2TB Firecuda for games and current projects, and a 2TB hard drive for older stuff/archives/non-speed dependent stuff. Then let's have an 850W power supply and the best cooler there is. Finally, we'll put all this in the excellent 5000X case. This all comes to €3512. It's honestly over-specced in a couple of places (principally the storage), but it's an absolutely bulletproof build.

With a system like this and still money left in the pot what about upping the warranty to platinum

If the Oracle DB is for production and you plan to do any serious VM hosting (and given your budget) - I would be focusing on thread ripper, 64GB memory and external NAS for backups... But if the DB is only for local dev work, I would not...

I'd be firing in a 1000W PSU as well, with the way the new GPU's draw power the larger PSU are going to be more common I reckon in future
