Hi guys - I've just purchased the build below last week. Please let me know if there is anything you would change or areas I could improve without pushing the budget up by too much. The PC will be to replace my current gaming pc (I7 7700k, EVGA 1070 SC Edition, 16gb Corsair Vengeance 2400MHz) and my current monitor set up is:

Main Monitor - 27" Acer Predator 1440p 144hz IPS
Second Monitor - 27" LG 1080p 60hz IPS

I will be looking at upgrading to a 4K monitor at some point later down the line.

I don’t want to sound harsh but it’s a build with some serious issues. An older, lower core CPU in a liquid system, paired up with a 3080 and a 1440p monitor. This does not make for an amazing system. I’d strongly recommend cancelling the order and coming back to us with a budget so we can spec you something much better.

Don't worry, I don't take any offence to what you said. Any chance you can ellaborate further on the issues you see? I understand your initial thoughts on the cpu, but there's quite extensive benchmarking at 1440p showing very little bottlenecking, if any in some titles, and even at 4k the numbers arent terrible.

What are your main issues with the build? Is it just those you stated, or were you holding back? I'd like to hear them all, if there are more.

First things first, we generally don’t recommend a liquid series. Yes, they look great but they come with so much baggage; more maintenance, risks of leakage that can cause catastrophic damage, the extra care you have to take simply moving the things. Modern AIO coolers will keep a CPU just as cool and without all that extra hassle. It’s also cheaper and you can still have a great looking system with judicious use of RGB lighting.

The motherboard is high end and definitely not required for the CPU you’ve chosen. You should ideally be looking at a 5000 series AMD chip as they’re superior on single threaded performance, which is what you’ll be looking for in a gaming build. Also factor in that the new consoles are using eight core processors, going for the 5800X would ensure longevity for the build.

The 3070 would be a better proposition as a graphics card. You’ll get god tier 1440p gaming and it’ll also perform well at 4K 60Hz. The 3080 is a waste unless you’re looking at spending upwards of £800 on a 4K 144Hz screen or a super ultrawide beast like the Samsung G9.

You’ve also gone for a low end slower WiFi card, the storage could do with a tweak, the silver warranty for an extra fiver is massively sensible.

Here’s a balanced system that’d suit you, not sure what your budget actually is but it’d be a much better rounded build than your original spec...

You’re welcome! I guess it just depends how soon you were planning to do the monitor upgrade, really. If it’s within the next six months or so, then by all means do it. If it’s going to be much longer, then bear in mind that that there’ll probably be a new GPU on the horizon that’ll outclass the 3080 and the money you could have saved by going for the 3070 at this stage would be wasted. It’s better to screen match now and get the best bang for the buck, there’ll always be diminishing returns if you overspec the GPU with plans to upgrade your monitor later 👍

There’s a fair few 4K 144Hz monitors out there but I don’t personally think they’re all that amazing. If I was getting a 3080 I’d want one of these!

There is a long wait for 3080s at the moment with some people waiting over 100 working days for their build. The 3070 (at least recently) has a much shorter wait time. The 3070 is much cheaper and a more sensible choice unless you want to game at 4k @144hz +. The 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti are scheduled for May. You can always amend your build if you wanted one of those when it's released.

I'm currently 70 workings days into the wait for my new PC. I've mostly kept the build out of mind, in an attempt not to drag out the wait. Recently though, I've started to wonder more about thermals for the build. Anyone fancy giving their opinions regarding temps and if they would recommend adding any additional case fans, and if so which?

My apologies if this should have gone into the sales advice board - but I was unsure as I had already purchased this one and was more just looking for a second opinion on the fans.

Think you’re set on the cooling front. You’ve got a decent airflow case and a top notch cooler in the 115i Capellix so you shouldn’t need any extra fans.
One change I might recommend is swapping the Corsair m.2 to the Intel 670p. With their latest iteration the Intel drives have substantially better write endurance compared to the Corsair, so it should last longer.
Overall though, looks like a quality build, and it’ll be worth the wait when it arrives! 😊
