Advice for 5900x / 3080 Build for Gaming

You will want to up your monitor IMO. It's honestly a big waste of cash on the GPU for your uses. Better to keep the cash and buy next gen with a monitor bump IMO.

You will be fine with the H100i too, that should fit most cases.

Yeah I'm thinking of upping the monitor as well, although seems like the price point is still a bit off for the 4k monitor market.

RE: my 3080 dedication, when you really dive into the benchmarks something like Control is only hitting 4k60 average on a 3080! And even then it's just shy.. Even at 1440p, Control with raytracing on is averaging 43.9fps on a 3070 so honestly I'm just not sold on it being as next gen as I'm hunting for.. especially with my PS5 on the way :D

And I know it's the most heavy hitting of all the games but it's one of the ones I'm stoked to play.

Good to know on the H100i, going to play around with a few cases anyway seems like the H115i is quieter.

Those benchmarks are effectively stress testing at worst case scenario to push the cards to their ragged edge to gauge performance. When it comes to actually playing the games you always tune the game to your desired experience. The 3070 is the equivalent of a 2080Ti which until very recently was the 4k 60FPS gaming go-to.

For years previous the 2080Ti has been shown not hitting 60fps in certain games at certain settings but it's always been the 4k go-to card.

If you're happy to pay the expense of the 3080 to simply maximise the settings then that's fair enough. What you should understand is that there are a number of those settings that make no visible difference to you. You would literally need to pause the game and scrutinise it to see the effect (sometimes even then I'm oblivious). With any fast paced/action game, such as control, such settings are meaningless other than in the benchmark, bragging rights scenarios.

With regards to the PS5 (And the Xbox), the settings are MASSIVELY dialled down in order to hit those magic numbers.

The H115i will be quieter, by the very design of it, but similar to the settings above... I doubt it's meaningful.

You need to be very careful when viewing reviews/benchmarks/release videos etc. It's very rarely based on real world scenarios. The reviews etc are almost always based on worst case scenario, in order to keep the playing field level. You need to read between the lines to your own requirements to how many elements are going to affect you. This is what is lost in most purchasers of any tech.

Super interesting thank you, can you share an example of a setting that wouldn't be necessary? I really do want to tune up all the raytracing bells and whistles but if there are less relevant settings I'd love to know..

And yes totally aware of the cap on a PS5 which is what draws me to PC, so I don't want to 'settle' if that makes sense!

There are various different ones. An obvious example is grass effects in Project Cars 2. I can put that on ultra, or I can put it on medium. I get about 10% more FPS on medium and 0% difference to in-game driving.

There are literally 1000s of variations in every game.

I'm totally with you on Ray Tracing though, it makes a huge difference to the visuals (in some games more than others obviously). The great thing is that with DLSS2 and Raytracing switched on, you're still going to hammer those FPS in most games that has it well optimised. In the ones that don't, it may take some finesse to get the best out of it but if you consider games like FS2020.... it takes finesse to get it right at 1440p on a 3090 if you want over 60fps :ROFLMAO:

I think the real irony is what actually matters when you are gaming. I'm genuinely one of these people that seeks the nirvana of pub talk. If someone says they have managed something or done something, I'll shoot for it and aim to go past it. When benchmarks are made, I'll try to beat them (I was top of the firestrike charts for a number of weeks). When all that blows over and the cold light of day appears..... do I really care about FPS or grass effects? No... not really... it's all for the chase and the fun of it. When I actually play the game I just want it running smooth and looking good. Does 50FPS look worse than 64FPS? No.... I can't even tell the difference to be honest.

What does matter is frame consistency (professional FPS aside). For a good experience you will get FAR more out of a good asynchronous experience than you ever will out of 3000FPS that's all over the shop. That's where Gsync and Freesync really come into their own.

As an a-side, when I'm not FPS hunting on FS2020 and various other games, and I actually sit and game, I do so via 1080p 60fps locked.... and notice absolutely zero difference that matters. If I had a 4k telly I would actually be able to use my 2080, which would be nice haha.

Hi all! Just put in the following order and would love any advice on the spec... particularly with the cooler. I am seeing that the PCSpecialist prebuild with the 5900x & 3080 includes their PCS Liquid Cooler 240 RGB, but to be honest I have always been nervous about liquid cooler leaks. Is there a long warranty on that cooler? Also, should I add an additional 3 fan setup rather than just the 1 additional rear exhaust?

Thank you!!

Hi,

Would love to know how you are getting on with this spec as it is (almost) similar to what I am on the waiting list for.

How's it going?
