Advice on Defiance VII Specs

Hi all,

First time not buying a named brand (HP ASUS etc) so if people have a check of this spec before I pull the trigger would be appreciated!
Looking to basically be able to play whats out now with a bit of security for future games. Not looking to play Crisis but your usual AAAs (ie RedDead 2, ArmA 3 any new Battlefield etc etc)
I am looking to keep the price around the £1500 mark, 17.3" screen is a must and I will use it as my personal laptop so at least an hour of battery life would be ideal.

Thanks a lot! Nick

Any specific reason why you opted for the defiance instead of the vyper? The build quality is a lot better on the vyper and the defiance has been getting some screen problems recently:

Laptop Screen Falling Out of Case | PCSPECIALIST

The vyper would be around £100 more expensive, but it could be £60 if you lower the storage a bit. You will end-up with a magnesium-alloy chassis, faster storage, faster RAM, better CPU and GPU. I think it's worth it:

Chassis & Display
Vyper Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD 144Hz 72% NTSC LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Eight Core Processor 10875H (2.3GHz, 5.1GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair 2666MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2070 - 8.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3200MB/W)
2nd M.2 SSD Drive
1TB INTEL® 665p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 2000MB/sR | 1925MB/sW)
Price: £1,635.00

Thanks for the feed back - no there wasn't a particular reason beyond looks and price but thats good to know thank you.

I real terms is there much difference between the Samsung and Intel SSDs?

Just for my education as new to this how would changing the chassis improve the CPU and GPU or is that coming from the faster SSD?

Thanks

Sorry, my bad.. the CPU is indeed the same (I thought the defiance had a 10750H), but I what I said about the GPU is still correct. The defiance has a 2070 max-q, which is a low-powered version of the 2070 mobile. It will perform the same (if not worse) as a 2060 mobile.

Regarding the Samsung storage, it will be an improvement on 2 things:
  1. performance for windows boot and apps loading/installing will be a bit faster;
  2. the endurance of the Samsung drives are miles better than the intel, my guess is about 4 times more? You can search about this in more depth. So for a boot drive that deals with cache, virtual memory and stuff that gets written and deleted very frequently, in my opinion it's always better to have a drive with better endurance.

Ah gotcha thanks a lot - didn't see the difference in that the defiance has Max-Q and the Vyper does not nor did I realise there was a difference so thanks for the heads up.

Might be tempted so go for the 1TB Samsung as the main drive then as I have about 1.1TB of storage currently and always having to delete and re install games

No problem! Regarding the storage, I don't think that having a 1Tb samsung drive is needed (unless the budget won't be a problem). When I mentioned endurance as being an improvement, I was thinking about multiple daily writes and deletes (as happens with cache and Virtual memory). I don't think you'll be removing and installing games multiple times a day (at least I hope not :D ) and any frequency that is lower than that (like weekly or every few days) should be fine for an intel or PCS drive for a good number of years.

I always prefer to have a high-speed and high-endurance drive as the main one (250 or 500Gb, the latter being ideal for future-proofing, but the former would be fine for a couple of years), while having 1Tb or more on slower drives to install games and keep your other files. The higher speed of the Samsung drive won't be that noticeable while gaming, maybe 2-3 seconds faster loading times? That's not worth paying extra for it, imo. Photos, videos and documents I usually move to an external USB drive on a monthly basis.
