Hi, my budget is £600 (this is slightly over). Usage will be general office, school, browsing, watching some vids (no plans for gaming). If I can get the price down so much the better. Am working off a 10 year old steam powered laptop at the moment (Iknow....I know), need something quick before I pull more hair out. Thanks for any words of wisdom.

A decent PC with monitor just cannot be done for that budget I'm afraid. Sure, you can build one for that money but it is filled with limitations. In such a situation you would get a far more powerful laptop system which is what I would tend to recommend in this instance.

For a decent PC with monitor, keyboard, mouse and a Windows licence you are looking at around £900, rather than going under.

I did a guide on speccing up a system. For your uses you would want to aim for the lowest CPU and the lowest GPU options, possibly go 1 higher for the better connectivity on the GPU.

£600 wont be possible if you need keyboard and monitor.

£750 minimum would be more realistic. if you can stretch the extra £150 here's what i would consider.

Changes

- slightly better case & motherboard, gives you more room for future upgrades

- AMD Ryzen 5 - perfect for your needs

- Bigger power supply,

- m.2 storage - super fast boot & load times
SSD for 2nd storage - personal preference, however using a normal 1TB HDD (for 2nd storage) will knock £50+ off this build so its worth considering.

- 1080p 60hz monitor included

- Upgrade the warranty for an extra £5

- spend £40 - £50 on a decent keyboard and this should see you through

if you dont care about future upgrades then swap out the motherboard to a b450
