Hi,

Can someone please help me as I know little about PC as making the switch from Mac. My budget is £1500 max. So far I have slected the followng which matches my buget. Any help much appreciatedon how I may bring the cost down. I am a student and use After Effects ad Premier Pro a lot, occasionally using cinema 4d. I know that RAM is very important so don't want to go below 32gb.

Much appreciated!

Pretty much every CPU on the X299 motherboards is out of date and/or has better-performing competition that's cheaper.

While RAM is important, it seems extremely unlikely you'd need 64gb?

More CPU cores on a faster CPU, however, would be a huge advantage to rendering.

Also multiple SSDs, with one for the OS and programs, and a separate one for cache. And probably a beefier GPU as well.

If you're a student, does your educational institution provide Windows licences? Worth checking if you haven't as many do.

Perhaps something like:

I don't know if the 1660 has the required acceleration for the softwares in question. Last time I checked the 2060 was the minimum current gen option (unfortunately as it's quite a hefty price).

Unfortunately you're at a sticky price point to purchase a "have it all" system so there are some compromises to be made. Given that you are at a student level and not relying on it, so much, for a professional application you can play tunes with the spec. If I were in your shoes I would probably go for the following:

I've chosen GPU acceleration over multi-core support as AE is notoriously sketchy with multi-core anyway. Primary drive I've gone for 1TB as your working directory for projects can get rather big depending on the size of files you are after. 512GB cache drive, this is likely more than you will ever need but it depends on your project size, I've bumped up the generic storage too..... because project size.

Case I've swapped out to a known good case, not sold on the PCS ones.
PSU I've gone for the 550w as any more is overkill for this sort of system
Cooler I've swapped out to a cheaper one as the 3700X is a reasonably cool chip, it'll just help with airflow
Silver warranty.... always worth it.

Ideally you would want 64GB of RAM, the 12Core 3900X, a H100i RGB platinum cooler and a 750RMx PSU, that's professional level though and you can always upgrade to those components down the line should you want to (Hence why I left the 570 motherboard in there, although I would probably choose the Asus over the Gigabyte in this case)

I can't find something that says the 1660 Super does but I can't find something to say it doesn't. Or are the other softwares somehow limited to RTX GPUs?

The limitation was with CUDA 9.2 but I don't know if that has been implemented with the latest drivers. There are, as always, workarounds for most Nvidia cards but it can cause hassle.

This was one of the links I posted previously.....

Hopefully the 1660 is now supported though, there's no reason (power or RAM wise) that it shouldn't be IMO. Seemed like a money grab from Nvidia.

If it IS supported I would go with the 1660, or even the 1650, all day long as there's no need to waste money on the GPU for it's utilisation.

The most recent post on that thread looks like someone with an RTX 2060 Super having the same problems, and having to use the same workaround, thus the 1660 / Super etc should be as good as anything else. Which would save most of what is needed for the R9 CPU. Granted the R9 may not be an seet for After effects but for rendering in Premiere and I assume Cine4d, the benefits of the R9 are pretty large. :)

Indeed, as the "Super" variations weren't on the compatible list either. Software limitation.

I don't believe there are any hardware limitations using the 1650 though.... it meets the specified requirements as well. I think it's purely software. Prior to the Super options being released the 2060 was definitely the minimum, "out of the box", option. Given your table above it would appear that the driver updates have now covered more versions of the latest cards so hopefully all OK.

R9 is definitely the go-to for this sort of work. At a student level the 3700X shouldn't be sniffed at though, it's no slouch. If the 1660, or 1650, is viable then I would probably pocket the savings for the next big upgrade..... when things get really serious :D

Thank you so much! I’m a bit out of my depth here but learning as I go along

Wow. Thanks for all the above device although I feel a little more confused if anything. I am a motion graphics masters student but do have some freelance work in the go. I’m hoping I can upgrade some components in the future when I start earning proper cash. A couple of questions:

1) Why have you specced 2x m.2 drives?

2) is the graphics card the ‘founders card’? ...by Nvidia?

3) If I can lose or downgrade one of those drives, is it worth upgrading the GPU to the 2060 super? Or the 2070??

Thanks!

1. After effects and Premiere Pro make great use of cache drives. The cache drive is effectively the over-spill from the RAM when you run out (Large projects). This means you have more preview etc available to you at any one time. It's pretty much the meat and potatoes of any video editing system.

2. No real way of knowing. You could call them at the time of order to see what they have in stock. If it's a blower card I would purchase one yourself and fit it.

3. You want the lowest spec GPU that is compatible. It doesn't have THAT much of an impact as it only encodes effects rather than the video itself. I wouldn't downgrade the drives, RAM or anything like that for the GPU.

IF you don't need 1.5TB of SSD storage for the foreseeable, there is an argument for getting smaller drives. e.g. a 256gb + 512gb versus a 512gb + 1TB SSD.

Since one day you will likely upgrade to faster drives, which aren't even on the market yet. If you don't need the extra space before that point, no need to buy it for something you'll replace :)

Hi, I'm in a similar position - need a budget pc for After Effects and Premiere. So wondering how you got on with yours? Did you buy? How has it worked out?
Hope you have a moment to let me know! Tim
