All advice welcome...100% clueless!

I bought a custom PC from PC Specialist around 10 years ago. I've never had any problems with it or had to do anything to it. It has just worked (!) and still does. It is aging now though and getting slower which is why I'm replacing it.
I want to replace it with a laptop, even though I feel the lifespan of this could be shorter? As I'm not always in one fixed place.
I use it mainly for playing puzzle adventure games and Second Life.
Plus, I also like creative writing and editing photographs.
I was just going for fairly high specs so I hopefully don't have to replace it for a while but I am totally clueless.
Will I have to do lots of maintenance? Is a custom laptop going to be something you feel I shouldn't be buying as an untechy person? (I came back because I've been so happy with my PC's performance.)
Thanks ☺️

What's your max budget?

Be advised that Intel CPUs are DOA, it’s just not worth buying anything Intel and PCS don’t stock any high-end AMD chassis currently.

About 3-4k
What I'd like the most is a laptop that will last as long as possible but I don't know whether that's an unrealistic expectation with a laptop.

While your budget is healthy enough to afford a laptop that will last for a good 4-5 years, INTEL is currently broken and can’t guarantee that with the 13th and 14th gen CPUs. Honestly, I would stay away from INTEL.

The microcode that is supposed to mitigate the issues is not expected to be released on laptops.

Alternatives are AMD chassis, but at the moment there are only low-end models available with weak GPUs like the 4050/4060; those specs don’t allow for the performance and durability you are looking for.

New laptops are usually announced at CES in January and released to the market around March.
