I have to say, the more I look at the unveiling video, the less convinced I am that this is a true representation of real world performance. The lowered graphics settings on the AMD SLI setup on a game that is AMD optimised and it's only getting a couple of frames a second more.

Translate this to other AAA titles on the SAME graphics settings and I just don't believe we're going to be seeing the same numbers.

Benchmarks await!

It's offering potentially 980 (or more) performance at 200$, the launch price of the 960. That's only a good thing for the market, and is something Nvidia will have to address with their 1060 positioning. An Inno3D slide suggests it may be under the 980, so would presumably have to slide in some way below 200$.

It's just that comparing RX 480 in Crossfire against a 1080 running apparently higher settings was a silly thing to do. :)

If that's where it's positioned then it's still very impressive considering Nvidia still want £400 for a 980.

Some of the prices are creeping down a little, though I agree GTX 980/970 and R9 390/390X Prices haven't really changed, just like the FuryX and 980 ti are both still expensive. Perhaps once the 1070 and 480 are released and widely available we might see more movement there.

Just as an aside, it's worth noting that the pair of RX 480s used in the demo probably weren't the basic $199 ones, or else AMD's presentation chart would have said under $400 rather than under $500.

Our man on the scene, Leo Waldock did report however, that he felt the RX480s in the test system may have been modified, possibly higher-powered versions, since the cost rating was said to be sub-$500 (rather than $400), suggesting a few extra dollars were spent on those GPUs.

Which isn't inherently bad news, as if there are different versions of the RX 480 floating around at ~$199 and ~$250 that's just more choice. And we know there will be 4gb and 8gb versions at the very least.

AMD's reply. TL;DR - It's the GTX 1080's fault for the snow shader not being rendered properly. And the 1080 is actually let off the hook because this means it's doing less work that it should. And Ashes is procedurally generated too.

I guess one can make up one's own mind about this response and the extent to which it addresses the apparent differences between the two screens. We can all agree that it won't be long after the card's release for this bench to be re-run :)

Typical PR response really. Could be true, but could be untrue. I'll be honest and say the 1080 image looked sharper and of higher quality.

Don't look like they're interested in the high end, which is a shame because we'll continue to be ripped off by the ridiclous Nvidia prices, but its good news for the lower end which don't get much attention usually.

Is it significantly better than the gtx 970? Some retailers are offering the gtx 970 close to £200. The depreciation has definitely decrease the value for money in choosing the 480

PCS have the gtx970 as £60 cheaper in their configurator compared to the r480. The gtx980 is only £39 more than the r480.

So the r480 is not really good value then if you are just buying a gpu? Unless I am missing something

Some benches for the RX 480 seem a bit disappointing. It kind of trades blows with the 970 and 390 in some reviews:

Obviously there are dozens of reviews and I've only waded through a few.

It also seems to use only slightly less power than a 1070. It's a decent card but seems to have been a tad overhyped going by some benches. That said, I don't feel bad about telling people to wait for benches before buying as at least it's an option on the table and the other cards' prices don't seem to have shot up.

I have seen the RX 480 4gb version on offer at less than £180 though so at that price point it's a no-brainer. The 8gb version is ~£220-£240 and probably isn't worth it over the 390 unless you have a tiny PSU...
