FYI I have merged your recent threads as they're discussing the same system - rather than creating new threads each time just post here then all the info/questions/comments are in one place - makes it easier for everyone.

Hi There,

Not sure what the watts have to do with anything, you will plug your monitor's into the wall separately, they won't be powered by the computer. The 3080 is more than capable of driving the two monitors.

Thanks Nursemorph,
Just wanted to ask since the website says you should check the power situation for your monitor in regards to your system. It did confuse me, but I haven't bought a system for years so wondered if things had changed regarding monitor power usage and connection. Good to clear that up. Thanks again.

As above, the GPU is what powers the monitors so, as long as you have enough power in the PSU to power the GPU, then you are fine....the minimum recommended for the 3080 is 750w...given you are going with a Threadripper, I'd say the 1000w is a good call as not sure if the 850w would be enough (no clue on TR power usage)

Only question I have is whether a manual overclock on the chip is worth it....guess it depends how many cores will be used etc. If all cores are going to be regularly used, then I guess a manual overclock (lower clock count but across all cores) over the in-built clock (higher clock count on the cores being used at any given time) may be appropriate I guess...not really my area of knowledge though
Yes I wondered about the over clock? I use Maya (3d modelling and animation) which renders with Arnold so just wanted something fast and powerful. I might post something on this forum specifically on this subject as I'm not sure of the advantages over overclocking either.

Overclocking in your uses will have some merit as it will be more forceful of the high end boost clocks. It varies chip to chip but it will definitely help for multi-threaded workloads.... such as Arnold.

Photoshop will take a very slight hit due to being more single threaded but at this level of performance it won't matter and I doubt very much you would notice it. With the GPU taking care of a lot of the acceleration I don't even think you would notice it without bench measurements.

The build itself looks pretty good to me. I would personally choose a far better looking case for such a build, especially when selecting RGB components etc.

I would also consider a second M2 drive for the storage over a standard SSD. They will be miles faster for your renders etc. You could also consider a small 250GB scratch drive for memory overflow/buffer.

Thanks for that. Really helpful Scott.

Not too bothered what the case looks like just so long as it has good air flow and appropriate fans. Flashing leds aren't really a concern for me.

BTW. How does the scratch drive work and why is it necessary?

Mike.

It really depends on how your programs are going to use the cores. AMD chips have an in-built overclock which automatically boosts the cores in use to the highest frequency therby maximising CPU power...however, my understanding is it can't boost like that if all the cores are in use so, in that situation, a manual overclock may be better as it will give you a stable clock speed across all cores.

@SpyderTracks or @Scott are the people to ask here as I only know the basics of it and no idea if the TR chips have the in-built overclock
Thanks Nursemorph.

Really appreciate your balanced, unbiased and more importantly, unsarcastic views. So important on a forum like this. Everyone seems so helpful here. :)

Isnt the new Zen 3 Threadripper chips due out at the end of next month? Might be worth checking them out before you pull the trigger on this build?

Ahh, you have selected the RGB Pro RAM, as well going for the standard RAM over that :)

A scratch drive basically spills over your RAM onto the HDD when it's full. It helps massively with large projects as when RAM is filled, the disk is used as a cache. When you have a separate cache drive purely for this purpose it makes everything FAR quicker as there is no queueing for other tasks to complete during the process. It's never going to be as fast as actual RAM but the faster the drive the better, hence the recommendation of a fast M2 drive for a scratch disk.

I must admit I was seduced by the 'pro' in the RAM description :-D I have no idea what the RGB part is referring to? Are you saying that the standard RAM performs the same?

In reference to the scratch drive.... Is that difficult to set up?

The "Pro" aspect relates to the RGB element of it. It lights up :D

It depends on the software really, anytime I've seen it it's been really easy. It's a fairly standard option, just look for cache/scratch options in the software you are using. It should be a case of simply selecting the drive/folder you wish to use.

Hi Scott,

In reference to the scratch drive you suggested. Would you advise an M.2 SSD or is speed not quite so important in this case?

Thanks for all your help btw.

You've configured 64GB of RAM and most scratch drives don't need to be terribly huge (it depends on the applications using them) so with all that RAM I'd investigate setting up a RAM drive for your scratch drive. That's going to be way faster than any NVMe SSD you can buy.

Thanks Ubuysa,

Exactly how do you set up a RAM drive as a scratch drive?
