AMDKMDAG.sys and atikmpag.sys error and BSOD

I keep getting random black screens sometime when i boot up and i have also had BSOD that says its a video scheduling error. I have had this computer for about 6 months now i bought it from pc specialist and this problem has been constant, i thought that it might just be the amd drivers that is causing this but i dont think it is as i have DDU the drivers and i have installed new ones. So since i thought it was a driver problem thats why i have left it for so long.

All of the things i have tried:
1. I have tried DDU drivers then installing new ones
2. I have rolled back drivers
3. I have changed the connection cable
4. I have tried wiping windows twice
5. Memtest which was passed with no errors
6. Bios was updated 2 months ago

  • Just some extra info i have a two monitor setup but this was also happening when i had it as a one monitor setup. It could be the drivers but this has been happening for the past 6 months and in that time i have tried a multitude of drivers. I don't think its a overheating problem as the problem will start to occur after i start up the computer in the morning sometimes, the problem will happen some days and some days it wont.
Event viewer says this:
"Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

WhoCrashed also said that my minidump that the computer created says this:
"
On Tue 20/10/2020 09:58:18 your computer crashed or a problem was reported
crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\102020-4750-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: watchdog.sys (watchdog+0x3AD0)
Bugcheck code: 0x119 (0x1, 0x45, 0x48, 0xFFFF900645DDF000)
Error: VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\watchdog.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

Bug check description: This indicates that the video scheduler has detected a fatal violation.
The crash took place in a Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

Minidumps have also said crashes were also caused by these:
1.amdkmdag.sys
2.atikmpag.sys

Well, it all points to graphics drivers near as I can tell (not an expert).

First question, when you say you "wiped Windows" twice, how did you wipe it? Did you just reset from within Windows or did you do a full reinstall using a USB drive? If it was just the first option, then it doesn't do enough...just restting it doesn't guarantee anything causing the issue is removed. If you haven't tried it, then resinatll Windows using a USB stick:

Yeah i reset windows from within the windows settings. So I should reinstall it by a usb drive? If i do that will i need the product key or anything like that? Since windows came preinstalled on the system so I don't have the product key.

The Windows 10 key is tied to your hardware....when you reinstall Windows, it automatically detects the key (I did a full install 2 weeks ago and had no trouble).

Definitely need to completely reinstall Windows and don't save any data or anything....it basically needs to go back to how it was when first installed...so make sure to back up any documents etc. If possible, you really want to download and install the tool to USB on a different computer that you know works properly just to ensure there's no issues...obviously do it on your PC if you have no access to another PC.

Here's a forum topic to go through the reinstall process:

Thanks i will do this tonight and report back (y)

Fingers crossed it works. Sometimes the reset Windows from within Windows doesn't work....my Mum's laptop was having issues and rest didn't fix the problem but a full install via USB did (her problem was minor compared to yours mind).

Even if reinstalling doesn't fix it, it gives us a baseline...but generally if a fault continues after a full reinstall, it more than likely points to hardware rather than software/drivers

One other question: What anti-virus do you use? Did it come with Bullguard? If so, make sure that Bullguard is not installed...it has been known to cause major issues for systems..we have seen quite a few people recently. Windows Defender is better anyway and has no conflicts as it's part of Windows
I use windows defender

How old is the PC?

Did you get PCS's permission to update the BIOS?

A fully clean install is the best next step. Allow Windows Update to install all drivers but then download the latest graphics driver from AMD and manually install that.

It's also entirely possible you have a graphics card hardware issue. How PCS respond to that may depend on whether you had permission to update the BIOS.
