I don't have the right monitor just yet but I'm looking at 144hz 1440p monitors right now, with a view to upgrade to 4K whenever I can. For size, at least 24".Also would be good to know what monitor this system would be paired with

until you get a 4k or something like a G9 then a 3080 is a waste, max of 3070 Ti for 1440p 144Hz

I would beg to differ there, a 1440p 144hz monitor will do in the meantime until I can get a 4K monitor. I'm not going to downgrade my system because of one extremely replacable part, I'd rather have the pc be overkill for a few months until I get the right monitor than settle for less power because of my current screen setup

If you're getting the 4k monitor within say 6 months or so, then yes, it's worth sticking with the 3080.
You will want a minimum of 850w PSU, nvidia founders edition cards recommend 750w, but aftermarket cards generally recommend 850w.
If it were me though, I'd want the extra headroom that a 1000w PSU provides, but I tend to go overboard with PSU's, I realise that's not so important to everyone. But I'd recommend checking the cost increase, and if it's not too much, it's worth consideration.

At that price, personally I'd say it's well worth it.
Remember the 850w is the MINIMUM recommendation for aftermarket 3080's.
It's worth having that extra safety net, and not running the PSU to the hilt regularly, gives the system a little more breathing room.

I'd agree which is why I followed your suggestion the other week & put one in the Berserker build, and I'm only going to have a 2070 super in that for now

Yes of course but in fairness the gpu was the only downgrade the cpu would be a upgrade personally in this round of cpus I would not go intel
Well worth it. The PSU is likely (along with good fast storage) to be the part that lasts longest/upgraded last in most systems. My old 2016 PC build's 750W EVGA G2 and SM961 m.2's are still great and do much the same job even if the 6700K and 1070 are now pretty much low tier parts.

Fair enough if you are going 4K relatively soon ie the next 6 months, but you'd be surprised the number of posts we get similar to yours and when you start questioning, people are talking a year or so down the line which would probably be considered GPU upgrade time.
