Any thoughts on this build?

Hi new member here, just ordered this PC and thought I would post for any thoughts.

I have had people tell me its a decent build and more than powerful enough to play games like Eve Online, Total War, COD WARzone on max settings, then others who are far more into their tech (Looking at all the micro stats) there are flaws with the processor and I should have gone AMD. Its led to confusion to say the least.

Eventually I will SLI with two RTx 2060 Supers :)

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

People here will recommend an AMD build for sure and also I've read recently there is little point to dual GPU.

Be prepared to cancel and start again

So would you recommend the same set up just with an AMD processor and suitable motherboard?

I'll cancel tonight and re order if it is as simple as that.

Any reason why?

I used to build PC's back in the day but its been like 15 years so I feel a little out of touch with technology now.

The people who have mentioned AMD are the ones to listen to. They will likely also tell you that SLI is a thing of the past and not really supported. Most people would opt for a single card solution. A 2080 Super would lay waste to SLI 2060s in most situations.

You would be far better cancelling and following up with a recommendation request before hitting the button again. The case selected is probably the worst part of all, it's very important to put all the nice shiny tech in a nice home to keep it safe :)

Have a read here, this will be quick catchup for you:

Would depend on the following:

What's the budget?
What monitor is the rig being paired with? Either resolution and refresh or just the model number would be fine.
Is it purely for gaming on the aforementioned games? Any other uses?

Worth checking out Scott's build guide and his different spec options at the bottom. Particularly: Excellent Mid-Level 1440p £1,199* - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/mXndDgqCNn/

On your build - Like that case is not worth it with only one fan etc.

For an AMD build around same budget you could look at something like: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/uUuaHKXGp8/ as you have the cash to get the Samsung M2 drive.

You actually only need the 3300x processor per Scott's example but its out of stock at moment.

Man I thought this was going to be easy and I was really confident in selecting all the gear to go in it. Now I am really unsettled by it all.

Budget: £1200/£1300

Screen: For the time being its a 40" HD TV until I get some decent MIS curved monitors (this is probably a good few months off yet). But If the system is good enough then you should be able to plug any monitor in and it will be good. Model number EU40H5000AKXXU.

Use: Playing Total war games on max graphics (mainly old ones and 3 kingdoms), playing Eve Online with two or more clients open, COD Warzone if I don't want to play on the PS4. Any new games that come out from Paradox. I literally only use my PC's for gamming and browsing the internet. No streaming or developing of anything.

Currently have a laptop: MSI Leopard GP72 with a 3rd Gen i7. It does well but its not the best when running dual clients and now I own my own home with an office I want a desktop again.

It's just the way it goes unfortunately, things chop and change so fast that even being out for a matter of months can throw you off kilter.

Last year I built a monster Intel build knowing fine well that a "storm was coming". I don't regret my decision as my old system was wanting, but if I was to build now it would be an AMD, absolutely no doubt.

For your build, here is what I am thinking....

3600 - 3300X would do you fine but they are selling out everywhere. The 3600 definitely won't hurt with the extra cores for the likes of total war etc so it's a fair shout
1660 Super - The 2060 Super is WAYYYY more than you need for your TV and it's VERY likely to be underpowered for any new monitors that you buy in the coming months. With the money squirrelled away and added to over the coming months you can get yourself the next generation GPU to match whichever monitor set you end up going with. The 3060 is going to make the 2060 Super look silly for very similar cash (as an example).

On top of that, you want a very stable foundation. Something modular that you can happily add to over the next few years. The B550 motherboard is going to be able to support the next generation of AMD and hopefully the generation after that. It's a no brainer. With a case, PSU, RAM and reasonable storage to suit, you should get 10 years out of this although it'll be like triggers brush by the end up.

There are a couple of things to think about. If you have a system with Windows on it that you can transfer, you could save around £90 at the moment. That would be a tidy sum to put away. If you are re-purposing your current systems though it might not be worthwhile.

The 1660 Super is MORE than enough for your TV. You may want to save further with the 1650 Super. With your games in mind I don't think they would mind too much and you would only be dialling the settings down to sensible levels anyway. This is up to you if you want to spend the extra. In your shoes I would probably have my eyes on next year with the monitors and GPU bump so would be happy to "make do" with the 1650 Super for now, turn the settings to moderate and salivate at the thought of 1440p goodness next year.

The only question in reply to that is getting a HDD over an SSD as the primary storage device going to make any difference?

I always assumed that SSD was preferable to HDD.

Check below the standard storage and you'll see the M2 selected. This is around 5-10 times faster than an SSD ;)

I did see that lol, and thank you so much for the guidance. I am just trying to get my head around why HDD rather than SSD.

I assume the operating system would go on the M2 SSD, so does it make much difference to have the HDD instead of the SSD as the 1st storage device?

It's budget related. If you want a secondary SSD/M2 drive then you could select another 500GB PCS M2 drive. I personally wouldn't waste a drive on 500GB though, I would want at least 1TB. This is the reason I went with the conventional storage as you get WAY more for your money.

If you wanted to swap it out with a 1TB drive then you would be fine. SSD isn't ideal but with the PCS M2 drives being out of stock it's really the only financially sensible way of doing it.

Thanks for your help on this. Definitely helped in making my decision. I took all your advise but opted for the 2060 super.

looking forward to getting the machine and watching all my games get a massive upgrade in everything 😂

It's a waste of money but it's your money to waste :)

Keep in mind, it's been said numerous times. The 2060 is too powerful for your monitor, not powerful enough for the next level of monitor and the next generation cards are out in September.
