Best role-playing game?

Although I've bought Euro Truck Simulator 2, SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition (contemplating whether I should buy the new expansion pack), Tomb Raider and AC4 Black Flag, I wouldn't mind playing a role-playing game.

But I'm not sure what I should buy. I'll be using the xbox 360 controller, but don't mind games that requre simple keyboard controls since I'm a 100% newbie at PC gaming.

Maybe someone can help me out deciding which are good for my specs below that should run on max settings, or near-max-settings? Also which are not fully online games like World of Warcraft.

Skyrim is a pretty awesome RPG. So are all of the fallout series games (imo 3 was the best, but New Vegas is still pretty cool too!).

I used to play Skyrim on the 360 and loved it. Not sure if I would want to play it again though.

Another question for you guys.
Just bought SimCity 4 and it says it requires Directx 8.1 . Can all games run on the latest version?

Not sure, if you have already bought it then just try it as for role playing games if you have played Skyrim you could try Oblivion some will tell you its better then Skyrim or like said above the fallout series is very good and I would agree 3 is the best.

I had problems getting fallout 3 to work on my PC. I think it may have compatibility issues with Win 7. That said, if you can get it to work then it is a cracking game. New Vegas is also good, not as memorable as Fallout 3 though.

Skyrim is great, as you've already played it you could try going through using a different play style. On the Xbox I used to have a character that would go into fights and rely on heavy armour and big sword fights etc, on PC I had a sneaky character that used a dagger and could steal all of their armour and weapons so even if you didn't kill them straight away they would have nothing to fight you with.. IMO playing like that made it almost like a different game. It certainly added a bit of replay value.

I tried Oblivion but didn't really get on with it although I've heard good things about it.

For role playing games you can't really beat Skyrim or Fallout 3 (unless you're willing to play really old games like Morrowind or Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, etc). I'd say Skyrim with a few mods, such as "SkyRe" which completely overhauls the game, makes it very tough, adds so much role playing stuff, so many new spells and so on and so on. Requires a little work to install but it's not so hard with a little googling.

Slightly different in that it has some RTS elements but look at Spell force 2 or if your really keen Never winter 2 is AMAZING and is at a decent price on GOG.com.

If you've played Skyrim already then you might want to avoid it unless you plan to spend tons of time modding it. I assumed I'd play through again and it would all be fantastic but really it was a bit dull second time round as I'd already spent like 60 hours on the xbox version and I don't feel it had the repeatability that Oblivion and the Fallouts had.

I'd stick with what you've got until you've played them a bit otherwise I doubt you'll find the time. Tomb Raider is a fantastic game and the other 3 are games you'll have to sink a lot of hours in to complete them. Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallouts are always coming up in sales and you can normally get the GOTY Editions for less than a fiver so worth holding out till then.

Did you solely want a Single Player RPG? Have you considered an MMORPG? I bought Guild Wars 2 when it released (about a year ago) and I've played it on and off ever since. I think there's a deal in the game deals thread for £20 at the moment and then that's that, no subscription, don't have to purchase 'cash shop' items if you don't want to, you can just come and go when you please and it's really easy to just pick up a play. Only issue is it's a typical PC MMO and you'll need to use a M+K and they're not the easiest of games to play if you've not tried them before... :D

You don't have to spend tons of time modding it anymore, not now we have Nexus Mod Manager which installs all your mods for you automatically and programs like BOSS which you simply click and it'll organize your mods load order automatically. After a fresh install of windows and after downloading Skyrim and all its DLC's I'd say it took about 20-40 minutes to install:

Script Extender
Unofficial Skyrim Patch
Unofficial Dawnguard Patch
Unofficial Hearthfire Patch
Unofficial Dragonborn Patch
Unofficial HighResTexture Patch
High Resolution Texture Pack 1, 2 and 3
SkyUI (A UI overhaul which does away with the nasty console interface)
Hothtrooper Armor Compilation (adds about a thousand new types of armour)
Skyrim Re-done (the mod I talked about earlier)
Enhanced Blood
Immersive Dungeon Sounds
Immersive Wilds Sounds
Immersive City Sounds (these 3 just add immersive sounds to, say, dungeons, such as the sound of distant rocks falling, to give more immersion)
ReProccer (you run this and it automatically adjusts all your weapon and armour values in game to be compatible with SkyRe, which has higher values for everything to make combat faster).

It took me longer to download them all than it took to install them and I have to say, it's like a totally new game, especially with SkyRe which I'm so impressed with.

I have lots of time on my hands at the moment, since I only work monrings at the moment lol. No I wouldn't play Skyrim again, even though its a good game, and I won't be modding any games. I'll only be placing one or two mods in Euro Truck Sim and that's all.

I played Oblivion in the past, but didn't enjoy it as much as Skyrim.

I own the Xbox 360 and I owned the new Tomb Raider. I completed it, but I want to play it again on the PC.

Yes I just want a single player RPG. Some years ago, I wanted to play a game, and I for the life of me, I can't remember what it was called. I know that there was, I think, a submarine in it. It was something like Myst or Syberia...

I know your looking for an RPG but those games you listed should keep you occupied for a while.

Also, i know it isnt quite an RPG but Far Cry 3 is very immersive, has an open world and amazing graphics. Its also been refered to as Skyrim with guns (although i wouldnt go that far) but its certainly worth a try. But if you were looking for something more RPGish i would go for Fallout 3, New Vegas, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Boderlands 2.
If your after high fantasy then theres Witcher 2, Dragon Age Origins or even Kingdoms of Amalur. All pretty long games, all single player.

I'll second Dragon Age: Origins. Without a doubt one of the best single player RPG's ever made with awesome story, awesome characters, great combat, awesome voice acting, great graphics... everything about it is wonderful. If you haven't played it before and you're still looking for a SP RPG, play this one.

Seriously... do it.

I searched Amazon for the game and its called Syberia: Amerzone! and its not a submarine lol
Might have to get the trilogy at some point. But there's only 10 left, so I better be quick!

I've already played Far Cry 3 and don't fancy playing it again.. I've heard that New Vegas kind of sucks so I didn't buy it for the 360.. Deus Ex was a great game.. I've also played the latest Borderlands game.

I need something new to play, what I haven't bought before.

If you're interested in old-school RPGs you could check out Spiderweb Software. They just make classic RPGs (basic graphics, turn-based combat, excellent stories). They also have demos so you can try them out. Though you need to be into a certain type of RPG. :)

Planescape: Torment. Best. RPG. Ever.

VTM Bloodlines.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2.

The Witcher 1 & 2.

The entire Mass Effect series.

Skyrim isn't really an RPG, let's be fair, it's an exploration simulator, a virtual package holiday, if you will. Also, other than Ulfric Stormcloak I can't think of a single memorable character in it. Granted, it's fun, but if I were reviewing it professionally I'd be hard pressed to justify giving it above 73%.

Planescape Torment probably is the best (though I think the Ultima Series is up there too). I'm assuming you're waiting for Torment: Tides of Numenara then Encolpius? If it's even half as good as the original it will be worth it. :)

FF - a lot of games marketed as RPGs actually aren't. They seem to think if the main character has levels or a stat system then it's an RPG. Then again some of those are very good games. Just depends what you're looking for. There are lots of classic RPGs are available at Good Old Games. All packaged up to work on modern systems and pretty cheap too.
