Best role-playing game?

Damn! I never buy a game that isn't rated at least 74% :taz:

That's because back in the day, Amiga Power identified that 73% was the cut off point. The lowest score you could get away with giving a big name game without being sued or blacklisted by the publishers.

Amiga Power was the same magazine that got the boss of one developer ringing them up and screaming abuse at them because they reviewed a bowling game produced by that developer with the line, "Strike! This game off your shopping list!" Or something like that. They used to get themselves blacklisted by deliberately reviewing honestly. They'd then identify how they had to buy games using their own money and how the developer's petty-minded refusal to send them a review copy was factoring into their scoring. Had Metacritic been around they'd probably have had their offices firebombed.

I recall in 2010 there was a thing about how Ubisoft wouldn't let people review AssCreed II unless they promised in writing to give it a positive review beforehand. I can imagine A-P's response to that. They'd probably have reviewed it using blank pages and 0%.

And yes, Cricky, I am seeking to get Tides of Numenera even though it's not Planescape settingswise. Also Wasteland 2, which will probably make my brain explode like a blood sausage. Also The Witcher 3, which, given how pre-release bumf has stated it's bigger than Skyrim and deeper than Mass Effect, would be the spiritual successor to Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

Not Planescape setting but so many people who worked on the original are working on it I'm hoping it has the same feel. Hoping... :)

The Witcher 3 is a must for me too. It'll be the only full price game I'll be buying this year, or indeed will have bought for a while. CD Projekt are worth my money.

There are a few interesting RPG Kickstarters I signed up for recently which may not make their targets unfortunately, though there is still time. Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore - from the producer of Planescape Torment and The Mandate an interesting one where you control a spaceship and its crew.

Watching this video, I think I may have to consider buying Skyrim again. Maybe even Far Cry 3. I have four games to be getting on with for the moment, so I'll consider the buying more when I get bored of the ones I have lol

Think I'd have to buy the legendary edition of Skyrim :)

Only Kickstarter I've backed is Elite: Dangerous, and that's because I was a massive fan of the original and Frontier and suchlike.

I backed Elite too. Played it a lot in the old days, but not Frontier. I've backed about 5 kickstarters now (well that have succeeded) Elite being the dearest so the on the whole they're quite cheap, though it is a bit of a gamble. I hope they pay off. :)

I second Witcher series. It is a great game. Storyline, characters, graphics, music, fighting mechanics, adult content... it all adds up to one of the greatest package of them all. On top of that if you ever read Sapkowki's books (on which Witcher is based) it will just add cherry on the top. Can't really compare it to any other game - even Skyrim. I suppose you can't go wrong with any titles mentioned before - but not playing Witcher series is a bad mistake for any RPG gamer.
... and since Witcher 3 is just around the corner, there should be no excuse not to!

Definately worth checking out the books. I read both of his Witcher Books a few years back and I see he has written another one this year with another out next year.

I have read the first one, "The Last Wish," and I noted that nos. 2 and 3, "Blood of Elves" and "Times of Contempt" are now translated. That just leaves "Baptism of Fire," "Tower of the Swallow," and "Lady of the Lake" to go.

You do realise he wrote them in the 1990s and they're only now being translated thanks to the games?

But back on topic, The Witcher series is excellently atmospheric.

Also, here's an old-school RPG recommendation. Actually more an adventure than an RPG but still. Quest for Glory. It's a sort of parodic deconstruction of heroic fantasy RPGs.

Aye, I knew they were available in Polish. I was just wondering why they were taking so long to be transalated into English. You'd think the demand would be there.

Quest for Glory. I remember that though never played it myself. I see you can get 1-5 on GOG for about 6 quid.
