Brand New Laptop Overheating?

Hey folks,
Just received a laptop today and have been setting it up, but noticing the CPU is running at 85 C + constantly. I'm far from an expert, but from what I understood that shouldn't be the case.
Does it sound like a problem?

What is the laptop doing when its running at 85C - just idling? If idle, that is a touch hot.

Can you post your specs from your order page?

Hi,
Yes, that is just idling/light use (web browser, just a couple of tabs).
And now it's showing as 96C... !
I'll add, in the meanwhile, that if I use the "Control Centre" to change it from either Gaming or High Performance to Battery Saving, the fans turn off nearly and the temp drops rapidly to about 71C and holds there.

It is finished updating, yes.

So, now it can idle in Gaming mode without getting too hot, but once it loads up a game it overheats and throttles performance within 1-2 min.

I opened it (after talking on the phone to them) and found it is covered by a black sheet. Is it meant to be?

That doesn't look right......

Well that's what I was thinking... Instinctively I would feel like whatever that sheet is would prevent proper cooling, but I'm also far from an expert. And this laptop would have gone through testing and quality control?

Seconded i have never seen a laptop cooler with a sheet of plastic on it like that. Looks like a sure fire way to keep the heat in. I have never had a proteus though.

Did you send that picture to PCS?

I will send it to them now. I had talked to them over the phone, but that wasn't particularly helpful, except for it leading to me to open up the laptop and have a quick look.

Yeah, never seen that plastic on top of the whole motherboard before, but also never seen a Proteus from the inside. Hopefully, some Proteus owner could confirm that to us, otherwise let's wait for PCS to reply to your ticket.

I opened my Proteus up and can confirm there was a plastic shield layer that you can pull off. I pulled mine off to see the ram and ssd etc but didn't notice any thermal change.

The Proteus I have can idle at 45-50 and around 70- 80 under load/Gaming with the max fan speed button set to on. These temps do vary a lot though. Also the Proteus I have is similar spec wise.

Thank you for your investigation here.
They did confirm it's supposed to be there.

And ya, your values make way more sense. Mine for sure has some kind of hardware problem and is going back to them.
