Hi, I would appreciate feedback on the below. Looking to build a workstation for photography and videography with a Canon R5, so any specific advice on if I have missed something that would help with editting the R5s footage I would appreciate. I will primarily use 4k but want the ability to use the R5s 8k capacity. TIA

Hi,

Sure, see here:

Im on the max of my budget already tbh, 3600 is my top end so with it something like £70 over that currently I would prefer not to increase the cost further.
That's not the link, it's specifically outlined above

I'd be inclined to get something like the below. It's on the Ryzen platform, which is much more efficient than the Intel option. It is certainly close in performance, probably ahead in video editing but perhaps a little behind in Photoshop. But the efficiency (low temperatures, lower noise levels) will be a substantial improvement.

I'm adding in a 1TB boot drive for Windows and your applications, then suggesting a second 4TB drive for your project storage.

I'd also counsel against RAID 1 hard drives. That achieves protection against downtime and protects against a single drive failure. It is not a backup as you still need to worry about malware, catastrophes like fire or water damage, physical damage to the PC, accidental deletion of files, etc etc. I'd spend money on a proper backup solution before getting an extra 8TB hard drive and trusting in RAID 1. (Of course if you already have the proper backup solutions, RAID 1 does mean you'll never have any downtime from a hard drive failure, so if your backup is already solid and you don't mind spending the extra on that niche need, by all means go for it!)

Thanks for putting this together, its great to get feedback too. A friend had suggested the 7950X and it looked great online, however, one thing swung me to intel. I noticed on Puget that currently the only hardware acceleration for decoding of 10bit 4:2:2 footage is on the 11th and onwards Intel chips via quicksync. Looking back at that article it didn't actually mention AMD Ryzen 9 but with a fresh search I'm still not sure if the 7950X has comparable hardware acceleration. I am using a Canon R5 which produces footage that has been covered as difficult to playback and edit, I have managed it on a high-end Mac Studio at work fine, however, I would prefer more user access hence building custom. Are you aware if the 7950X has some similar hardware acceleration? If not, do you know what kind of difference with/without quicksync for 10bit 422 would make? Thx

I appreciate the feedback on RAID 1 and having two SSD drives. Ill just keep running an external drive backing up the HDD. Is there a particular issue with having the boot drive being the primary work drive?

Sounds like you do need Quicksync then; sorry for not appreciating that before. Ryzen CPUs don't have hardware-accelerated 10bit 4:2:2 decoding, sadly.

I'm going to suggest the below as the equivalent-ish Intel build. The downside is the heat/power consumption: Intel's chips are the very opposite of the current Mac lineups in that sense!

Case
CORSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 20-Core Processor i7-14700K (Up to 5.6GHz) 33MB Cache Really good for video editing. Hot, but not as stupidly hot as the 14900K.
Motherboard

ASUS® TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI (DDR5, LGA1700, USB 3.2, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready
Memory (RAM)
64GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 5600MHz (2 x 32GB) Can't have 6000MHz with Asus boards; can't have Thunderbolt with Gigabyte boards. Choose your compromise!
Graphics Card

16GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4080 - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 6500MB/sW)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
4TB CORSAIR CORE XT MP600 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (up to 5000 MB/R, 4400 MB/W)
1st Storage Drive
8TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 3.5", 7200 RPM 256MB CACHE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ - MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR iCUE H115i ELITE CAPELLIX XT RGB High Performance CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
