Build Advice & Questions

Hello :) I hope it's OK to ask multiple questions here at once. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

First, my priority is to keep temperatures down and hopefully keep the machine running reasonably quiet.
For this reason, I'm going for the: "FRACTAL DEFINE 7 XL BLACK QUIET TOWER CASE" which I'm going to pair with the Ryzen 7800x3D (as It appears low wattage and runs cool)
I understand this case comes with 3 140mm fans and if I'm not mistaken has room for 8 120mm or 6 140mm more fans. Do you think it would be worthwhile to have more fans installed? will I see a noticeable performance boost/temperature decrease? and if so, are any of the extra fans listed on PC SPECIALIST better than others to limit extra noise? I've read brands like Noctua are good for this purpose but I don't see them listed. Which would be a good alternative?

I'm also trying to work out which CPU cooler would be ideal. So far it sounds like the 360mm frostflow cooler would suffice but I'm not sure if it will fit this case as the dimensions are "566 mm x 240 mm x 604 mm". Apparently mid sized towers can fit this CPU cooler so I assume I will be ok?

I am also unsure as to which motherboard to get. I want to get a DDR5-compatible version to upgrade my SSD in the future. I just don't know whether to get the ASUS TUF x670e or the ROG Strix x670e-a. Any pointers here would be very helpful! from what I understand it has more USB slots?
I'll be running this machine with a 4060ti. In the near future, I'll hopefully upgrade to the 4090. Do you a 1000w PSU is overkill for this setup?

Thanks for taking a look :)

I also wonder if it will be possible to manually control the fans that are included in the Fractal Define 7 case?

In particular:
  • What's the PC for?
  • What's the budget?
  • What monitor do you have?
  • Can you post a complete build including the green configuration link?
Much easier to answer your questions with a whole build and a budget in mind.

I think you can do much better, especially for that excellent display. But I'd spend a little less on case and motherboard and to go for a less expensive manufacturer of graphics card. I'd also change from the overclocking option to the standard AM5 tool. And I'd reconfigure your storage to get separation of boot and main storage devices, and to get more value for money.

There's an element of compromise here. The CPU is excellent for gaming but not the best for video editing. That's more reliant on the graphics card these days, though, so that's not necessarily a concern unless you're doing big projects for professional purposes.

Hey, thanks for the advice!

I thought about going for an AMD GPU and I still may at this point.

Regarding the AM5 tool. Do you just mean configure a PC from the "AMD® RYZEN AM5 EXTREME COMPUTERS" option in the AMD configure section?
I'm not exactly sure what you mean about reconfiguring my storage. To avoid confusion I already own a few SSD's that I will be installing into this PC. If you were suggesting I keep one SSD (M.2) for boot and others for storage etc then I'll be doing just that.

Do you think 850w would suffice for this machine? I may get a 7800xt.

I'm also thinking of changing the fractal case to the 7000D for better cooling and as a kind of extra work surface.

An AMD card is definitely an option. For a 120Hz 4K display I'd be looking at either the 7900 XT or the XTX though: the 7800 XT is really a 1440p card.

Yes that's the tool I mean. And it sounds like you have your storage sorted! Yes, that was exactly what I was recommending.

850W is probably enough. Personally I'd want "definitely enough" especially with the possibility of future upgrades.

The 7000D is massive! But if that's what you want...! Though I don't believe the cooling is significantly better than the Fractal case...

The 7000D is indeed huge but I'm unsure!! I thought it was one of the best for cooling from what I've gathered so far. Are you comparing it to the Fractal Define 7 or the Meshify 2? I personally much prefer the aesthetics of the Fractal cases but I've read thermals could be an issue with the Define 7 and I assumed the Meshify 2 just wouldn't keep my hardware as cool given the smaller size and lack of fan space. I wish PC Specialists stocked the Meshify 2 XL! size isn't an issue and the extra surface area could be used as a small workspace. That being said my ultimate goal is for cool temps while not being too noisy (which hopefully shouldn't be an issue anyway with the 7800x3D)

I will take your suggestion and plump for the 1000w jobby!

cheers :)

I'd say that good airflow is much more important than how many fans you can fit in the case. The Meshify is the case I'd go for myself: it has plenty of room for fans and really good inherent airflow.

The XL and the 7000D are more extreme. Your build with a 7800X3D and a 4080 is not actually going to generate that much heat; it's not an extreme scenario at all.
