Can I upgrade my graphics card?

New member
bought this a few (9) years ago, and its still running great for what i need it to do. however, it has started to creak a little on the graphics front. the site wont let me select a new graphics card when i go to upgrade through the system. Im not exactly a whizz, but can it just not be done?

You have a host of problems when looking to upgrade that system. The first is the power supply: it's very weak, so you'd need something much stronger, probably at least 650W but ideally 850W today. I thought initially that you might have problems with the case, but it seems it'll be OK for the majority of graphics cards. The rest of the system, well, it's quite old now (a nine-year-old chip and platform): this isn't necessarily an obstacle to upgrades, but it (a) will limit what you'll achieve and (b) should limit the amount of money you should spend on it!

If you upgraded the power supply and got a reasonable mid-range GPU like the Radeon 6600 (and got a second stick of RAM!), you could manage a significant upgrade, but personally I'm not sure there's value in that route...

You could stick something like a GTX 1650 in it and the power supply will handle that just fine. You would see close to twice the performance.

Depends what they use it for. Not everyone can afford to chuck a grand at a new PC.

You don't have to take take it down the canal, with a sack and some bricks. It can still sit on the rug by the fire and fetch your slippers, or keep an elderly relative company. That said, it wouldn't be a bad time to look at planning your next steps, whether that means reading up on new options now or starting to save so you are ready for a hefty Vet's bill down the line.
