Can someone check this configuration over please.

Hi everyone, I normally stick to Intel PC's but I saw a post on here regarding the I7's and I9's that scared me to death so I thought I would try an AMD PC for the first time.

As I know nothing about AMD, plus I'm a bit out of touch nowdays as my current PC is over ten years old I thought I would just run this configuration past you please.

I picked the case because it sounds like it has good airflow -do you think this one is going to be good enough to keep everything cool please?

I will mainly use the PC for gaming but also 3D rendering as I create 3D artwork using a program called Daz 3D/Blender.

What's your max budget? What monitor will you pair with it?

Max budget is £2500 (this build is £2590, (though I'll probably wait for the Black Friday sales as they are only three weeks away) no monitor, it will be used on my 65" living room TV (Sony) so HDMI connection is a must have.

PCS don’t do Black Friday sales, or any sales as prices are always rock bottom

what model TV is it? We need to know the resolution and refresh rate?

Is there a compatibility problem between the RTX 4070 and some TV's then, should I go for the 24GB AMD RADEON™ RX 7900 XTX that PCS recommend instead then?

It's not a compatibility issue, is that a 60Hz monitor/TV will bottleneck any gaming as not matter how fast a PC or GPU you have it simply cannot show more than 60 frames a second (even if the PC is capable of outputting 300fps).

So we tend to select the GPU based on the monitor's capabilities - otherwise you're wasting money on a GPU (usually the most expensive component) and not using its full capabilties. There's no point over-speccing if you're not getting a suitable display for 2-3 years as GPUs will have moved on 2 generations by then and you'd normally be considering upgrading the GPU to match your new monitor.

TV (even 120Hz OLEDs) still have some compromises, as unless they have specific 'game' or 'PC' modes, then you may have to live with their picture-smoothing, AI interpolation and (for non-OLEDs) different contrast/brightness/colours across the scree due to poor back-light implementations.

BUT, in your case, there's also the added need for a decent GPU to potentially accelerate your DAZ 3D/Blender workload (I don't know anything about these programs, so don't know if a powerful GPU helps or not, and whether AMD or Nvidia is the preference for them).

Ah I see :)

Just to clarify, I'm not a serious gamer as you guys clearly are, the games I'm currently playing on PC are Stellaris and Hearts of Iron IV so FPS isn't so much of a concern for me. I see my PC as more of a workhorse and the PS5 I use for proper gaming (FFVII Rebirth, Assassins Creed etc)

The reason I am spending so much money now is for future proofing, not for gaming performance. I brought my current PC in 2013 and brought the best stuff around at the time (Intel Core I7 4770) and because of that it's still going strong today and can still even play the newest games, so that's what I'm hoping to do with this PC -build one to last reasonably well for the next ten years or so.

So put the monitor/TV aside for now and just advise me if the build I have posted is a good one compatibility wise between all the components and if it has a fairly good chance of still being relevant in around ten years time like my current one is please :)

In general, and I know almost everything here will increase the cost, I'd say:
  • If you have Windows on your old machine, and it's being retired, then you can transfer your Windows licence over to save £100
  • You could move up to the 5000 series case for a bit more room/airflow (especially with lengthy/girthy GPUs)
  • Swap the PCS-branded cooler for a Corsair one (e.g. H115i / H150i Elite Capellix), as we don't (relatively) have good experiences of the PCS-branded items
  • X3D CPU will only help in gaming (and won't help in Stellaris as that needs fast cores, X3D tend to be slower cores for heat management), so you could save and get faster non-gaming performance by going for the cheaper non-X3D 7950X, or more performance in the newer, more expensive 9950X - assuming your programs scale with core count rather than clock speed; the 9700X is only second to the new 9800X3D in Stellaris, but you'd lose half the cores for your rendering work so it's a moot point
  • RAM needs to be at 6000MHz, which is the sweet spot for AM5 CPUs - and can add as much as 10% to the performance
  • I'd adjust the m.2 storage a little, as you don't want a large primary drive as it means you'll be tempted to store stuff on it - and you don't want to be storing stuff you don't want to lose on the boot disk (as it's the most likely of the drives to fail or become corrupt); if you still need 4TB of SSD storage (1x4TB otherwise 2x2TB) then I'd suggest putting in a smaller 512GB/1TB Solidigm Pro to act as your boot/apps drive and keep games/projects on the secondary/tertiary SSDs (and I'll assume you'll have a backup solution in place too)
  • I'd rather have an Ironwolf drive for slow storage, as they're rated for endurance workloads
  • For longevity, I'd prefer one of the newer ATX3.1 PSUs - unfortunately the 850/1000W offerings from PCS are the old ATX2.4 models which can't always handle the peak transient spike power loads of the current generation GPUs. ATX3.1 / PCIe 5.0 PSU solve this...however PCS only offer them in the 'too low' 750W or the 'too high' 1200W - so 1200w would be my choice...and give plenty of room for a new, beefier GPU in 2-3 years time

From those benchmarks, I'd say the 7950X is a good compromise of performance vs cost, as would help offset some of the extra spend elsewhere. I also don't believe there's a good argument of swapping to an AMD CPU as while you could save cash, they're not as performant in Daz 3D/Blender as the equivalent level Nvidia, and don't support the same technologies.

Right, this is just 'thinking out loud' and I know it's well over budget, but I've got to start somewhere and then trim the fat as you decide what you can do without. We could trim £176 off that with a case/CPU/motherboard/RAM changes mentioned below...which would

Case
CORSAIR 5000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE - the 4000X is a good case, but everything will be tighter in that than the 5000X - and an airflow case needs room to breathe; £32 saving if you go back to the 4000X
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16 Core CPU (4.5GHz-5.7GHz/80MB CACHE/AM5) - if time is money, then this is a good compromise between high/fast core rendering and Stellaris performance; if you're happy to increase your rendering time by 25% then you could go down to the 12-core 7900X to save £70
Motherboard
GIGABYTE X870 EAGLE WIFI7 (AM5, DDR5, M.2 PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7) - newer version of the B650 boards, and is upgraded with wifi 7, USB4/Thunderbolt, and PCIe 5.0 m.2 / GPU slots; £18 saving if you want to go back to the B650 version
Memory (RAM)
64GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 32GB) KIT - upto 10% performance gain over the 5200MHz; £56 saving if you're happy to go back to 5200MHz or £20 saving for 5600MHz
Graphics Card
16GB ZOTAC GEFORCE RTX 4070 Ti SUPER TRINITY BLACK EDITION - HDMI, 3 x DP - no change as I don't know what impact the GPU choice has on Daz3D/Blender
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 4700MB/sW) - primary drive for Windows, Apps only (not for any kind of storage)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 3325MB/sW) - secondary drive for rendering jobs/projects; I don't believe these need to be ultra-fast (but do say if there's a need for the 6000MB/s option)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 3325MB/sW) - tertiary drive for gaming or more job/projects (I assume); I don't believe these need to be ultra-fast (but do say if there's a need for the 6000MB/s option)
1st Storage Drive
6TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 3.5", 7200 RPM 256MB CACHE - 'slow' storage drive for non-live projects / backups
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1200W RMx SHIFT SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET - about the lowest of the new ATX3.1 spec PSUs I'd recommend for an 'always on' or long run workload (the 850w/1000w are older ATX2.4 PSUs, and the 750w ATX3.1 is too low)
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR iCUE H115i ELITE CAPELLIX XT RGB High Performance CPU Cooler - plenty of cooling performance to keep the CPU in it's most performant temp range - and won't be noisy doing so; could go up to the H150i, but it won't perform significantly better and the smaller fans may cause more/higher frequency noise; H100i would be underpowered for a high-core CPU
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card

ONBOARD 2.5Gbe LAN PORT

NONE OR ONBOARD Wi-Fi (MOTHERBOARD DEPENDENT)

I can't help with the GPU requirement, as I don't know what's important for Daz 3D (is it RAM or VRAM it's eating?). But the XTX will take you even more over budget if it's purely a VRAM requirement, but the next step down to the 7900XT would save £200 and still have 20GB VRAM.

All depends on the size of your scenes I suppose?
