Hi, very light gaming whilst on holiday! Would this laptop run Counterstrike source or something like Portal? or do I need a dedicated graphics card for any type of gaming?

Many thanks Gary

Hi all, I thought this was an easy yes or no, 32 looks but no replies:( . I have never played a game on a laptop without a dedicated card, but don't want the expense for a few weeks of the year, the rest of this build seems (to me) to be reasonable / good.?

Below is another build with a dedicated card 220.00€ more, I have also added a second drive and made the 1st drive smaller and just for the OS. Is it worth the extra? this is pushing the budget!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read it, but only to see if I can help.

I can't, and normally I'd just ignore it, but as no-one's replying I'll tell you why I wouldn't have normally replied to this type of query:
  • I don't play either of those games
  • I have never tried to use a laptop for gaming
  • I don't know what the equivalent desktop GPU & CPU to those laptop versions you've chosen are
  • ergo, my experience on different games, on different hardware, would have little relevance here

I think CS would run on Iris XE but it wouldn't be a great experience and your accuracy would be pretty poor. Portal though is a bit more demanding nowadays AFAIK and not certain how it would fare.

I would definitely suggest a dgpu in any scenario, the 1650 you'd still have to reduce settings but it would be substantially better.

If its literally just going to be for a holiday then a single drive would be fine, you can always add a second later on if you needed to.

At least you replied you cant help, any reply is better than deadly silence :)(y)

Great thanks, a second opinion just removes that doubt, DGpu defiantly then, might try a better DC and lose a drive.

Hi again, I have increased the 512GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (3500 MB/R, 3100 MB/W) to 1 TB, is it worth putting a partion in to protect windows start speed and if so what size would you recomend.
Thanks

SSDs aren’t the same as HDDs, imho they should never be partitioned these days, rather have individual drives. There’s no harm in partitioning as such, but it’s not the same as partitioning an HDD, they’re very different mechanisms. Partitioning won’t improve start speeds though, but will separate your data from the os should you need to reinstall windows. But I’d still suggest multiple drives is a better idea, the cost is negligible.

Partitioning a single m.2 will not give you any protection or performance benefits...only a secondary drive will do that.

If we're talking about the 2nd config you posted (with is a better build overall, and better display) and if it's only for a couple of games for a couple of weeks a year, then I'd just swap out the 2 smaller PCS SSDs for the speedier 512GB Solidigm P44 Pro. You shouldn't be using more than about 150GB for a full W11 install and a couple of games.

If you find yourself using it more and filling the 512GB SSD past 50/60% then you could always install a secondary SSD in the future...purely to move your game installs onto.

No matter the drive partitioning affects performance. It's never a good idea IMO. I used it a few times years ago for organisational reasons but only where I didn't need performance.

Windows performance, and the drive performance in general, is affected by the utilisation of the drive. Most SSD drives lose performance over the 60% capacity threshold. I typically aim for <50% utilisation to ensure that this is maintained.

The main reason I still don't recommend 1TB for a primary drive is that you are going to lose 50% of the capacity. The larger the primary drive, the more you lose. This is the reason I recommend 500GB when the performance options are available. That way the losses are minimal with the 250GB still being fairly generous for typical space requirements.

Thanks (y) Gone for the P44 512 primary drive and a 512GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (3500 MB/R, 3100 MB/W) as second/ storage.
The laptop I use now has a 500gb drive and its 75% full and slowwwww to start, so with some proper houskeeping the new storage should last.

What drive has your current laptop got? SSD or HDD?

That’s why it’s slow. HDDs are not fast enough for modern systems. They top out at around 120mbs. A normal modern SSD will be more like 6000mbs. If you replaced it with an SSD it would be far better.

It’s nothing you can solve by partitioning or file maintenance, it’s a limitation of the drive technology.
