Can't Deside Which Laptop 🙃

Hello all :)

I am new to PCSpecialist, my name is Luc and I'm from the Netherlands. I need some advice about two laptops, it's about these two:

  • The 17,3" Ionico® with a Ryzen 5900x and NVIDIA GeForce 3070
  • The 17,3" Recoil® with a 6 Core i5-11600K and NVIDIA GeForce 3070

The Recoil is more expensive but I am not sure how this one performs compared to the Ionico with these specs.

Hope someone can help me decide  Thanks! If you need more info please let me know.

Hey Luc,

I use the IONICO 15 with R9 5900HX and RTX 3070

What do you want to do with the laptop?

is it going to be a mobile workstation that needs to travel with you for work and therefore be able to perform off power and be portable?

or will you be mostly using it for gaming... so plugged in at your desk?

If you like aesthetics and portability the Ionico 17 is incredibly light and portable it's a 17 inch that feels like a 15 inch thin and light device with the horse power needed to perform valiantly in games and the magnesium alloy chassis is very nice! only downside is thermals. The R9 5900HX is power hungry and runs hot but performs like a champ. Mine idles at around 45 deg C and in general use is commonly between 55-60 degC. Under full load during games and stress tests my CPU gets up to 90+ DegC and throttles at 95/96 and under full load it does get that hot if you let it. Additionally, the ryzen 5000 chips can't be undervolted conveniently (If at all), at this moment in time. There is a software called ryzen controller that is supposed to be similar to ryzen master for desktop ryzen chips but i haven't used it yet and so can't advise. However, Intel chips run hot but are readily undervolted using throttlestop and Intel XTU, which is a big bonus as you can max out stock performance and reduce temps and undervolting poses no risk to your system. If you need to reduce temps that is. i think the 11th gen mobile chips are looking pretty good, especially with the PCie gen 4 benefit over ryzen for both GPU and storage But the ryzen 9 has more L3 cache than the i5. So it comes back to what you want to use the laptop for. If you need to do some serious CPU crunching tasks ryzen hands down for multi-threaded performance. Just games and office based applications the i5 11600K will see you all the way.

RTX 3070 in my IONICO runs at around 62/63 DegC during benchmarks and gets up to 70-75 during gaming which is awesome temps for how thin and light this laptop is. During Cyberpunk it gets up to 80 after awhile, I have fans set to max which is loud at 54dB but it manages to prevent thermal throttling and that's what you want! At idle in office mode the IONICO is whisper quiet around 20 dB. Undervolting the GPU is easy in MSI afterburner if yours does run hot and it's worth remembering that in a laptop your components all share the same cooling solution, heat pipes and fans etc so if you can keep the temperatures of your components down it helps out the whole laptop. the 1440p panels at 165Hz are great and get plenty bright. However, the panel + RTX 3070+ R9 5900HX = bye bye battery life. Using my laptop away from the wall i set panel to 40Hz and 1080p with medium brightness battery saver on and office mode enabled I get around 4hrs of general use out of my poor little 62Wh battery that way. But the 17 inch model has a much larger 91Wh battery and extra screen real estate to take more advantage of the 1440p panel. The Ionico is a very nice aesthetically pleasing laptop and it performs great. if you want the light, sleek laptop get the IONICO.

The RECOIL is thicker and heavier but will give you more thermal headroom and potentially enough headroom to do some overclocking if you want. If you're the kind of person who purely just wants to get maximum performance and push the laptop as hard as it will go in games and will be keeping it plugged into a monitor at a desk or willing to carry around a chonky boi then i say get the RECOIL. If you're happy getting performance enough to be able to game at Ultra settings at 60fps and slightly below (cyberpunk) in most modern titles at 1440p and 80-120 fps at 1080p and want a slimmer more portable device get the IONICO.

P.S. I got the upgraded thermal paste (ARCTIX EXTREME or whatever it is) on my ionico.

AND if you do go RYZEN get the fastest clocked RAM you can. so, from PCspecialist that will be the 2933MHz because the ryzen chips benefit so much from having faster memory. both intel 11th gen and ryzen 5000 mobile chips can support up to 3200MHz but you can't buy that from PCSpecialists. They likely have their own reasons for that. if you wanted you can always get the cheapest RAM they offer and then populate both slots with 8gb or 16gb 3200MHz sticks that you purchase yourself.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your detailed post, I have chosen the IONICO 17 with 5900HX and RTX 3070 with ARCTIX EXTREME because of this.
I have chosen the least memory PCS had and bought HyperX 3200mhz memory myself and it runs great.

It is a wonderful machine.
Thanks again!
