Is the monitor 1080p or 1440p. What will he use it for? And at what settings? Ultra, High or Medium.

it’s 1440p. I thought that might be best. It’s solely for gaming. Call of Duty, GTR, Battlefront etc

I also suggest to get a 2060 Super and change the 1tb SSD to a 4tb HDD. It wont run as fast but your son can put more games on it. Wont affect gameplay much. (loading times wise)

Thank you. I hadn’t thought about the relationship of the graphics card to the monitor but of course I want to get the best out of the monitor! I take it 1440 is the way forward yeah as oppose to standard 1080p? I know 4K is the dream but I also know on a 27inch monitor you really don’t get the benefit of 4K

Final point to add is the most important thing to my son is frames per second and graphic... I’m hoping I get it right 😬🤞😂

Last thing... it’s about £115 more to go for Ryzen 7 3700X and an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT...
Just thinking it seems easier to upgrade graphic card eventually rather than CPU so maybe best to go for and start at 8 cores?

Ok. I think I will just stick with the original Ryzen 5 and the 8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060 SUPER you and someone else recommended. I feel like I’m going down a rabbit hole researching this... seems I will get best out 1440p as originally suggested. Cheers again.

Ha ha Very true... I think he’ll cope with graphics but the one think he HATES is a ‘lag’.
out of interest what would make it a 144 system. What part of the computer is this lol. For future reference

You’d need the gpu to be a 2070 super for 1440p 144hz. The 2060 super will manage about 80hz at 1440p. Hz is the same as FPS (frames per second)

Thanks! might just check what the price difference is for that then with the Ryzen 5 3700X. Monitor I’m buying is 1440p. Just trying to get the least possible gaming lag without spending fortunes....

Lag isn't related to the GPU at all, moreso the monitor. A higher end monitor will have a faster responding panel. TN panels are a lot faster than IPS for instance, but sacrifice image quality and colour accuracy. That being said, some IPS panels have started being released which are just as good as a TN panel, but and IPS panel will usually cost around £500 - 800 compared to a TN at around £300 to £600.

As you have alluded to yourself, you're going down a bit of a rabbit hole.

The suggested builds and information are absolutely solid but if you have a look at my guide it should give you some food for thought. It's a little out of date now so it does need a re-visit but I'm waiting for the new GPUs to arrive before having another crack at it....

It's sooooooo easy to smash a budget when building a PC so the most important thing is to build a solid foundation so that you can add to it over time. Set yourself a budget target, if that's unreasonable we will always let you know. Once you are satisfied on the spend, get the best base you can for the money (you have). You can happily keep on adding extras along the way but it will cost you money, what you don't want to do is sacrifice that good base for an add-on, such as an increased CPU for the sake of the motherboard etc.

When I recommend a spec my thinking is always to have the main core components last 10 years. Sure you can end up with triggers brush with replacing GPU's & CPUs.... but the case, motherboard, RAM and PSU should see out 10 years without breaking sweat. The CPU should be the last thing to go and only replaced because you want more cores or etc. The 3600XT is a fantastic gaming chip and will serve well on any system. The 3700X (3800XT etc) will be good for database driven games such as turn based games etc.... but this is niche and all it's going to gain you is a few seconds between turns etc. It's not something to consider for the outlay (cooler etc).

This makes perfect sense, thank you. I will read your guide now! 😁
yes I’m hoping with a good foundation that lasts my son can add on without a complete new build. I just wish I could get him the ‘best’ right away but turns out these gaming pc’s are expensive 😅😂 lol

I genuinely wouldn't get too caught up in that. There are very 'high' diminishing returns from the "best". I'm my own worst enemy with things like this as I always overshoot what I actually need. You end up almost always regretting such splurges within 6 months when you find they are wildly out of date.

Even if the budget is unlimited, saving now to spend later will always make for a more powerful system........ and that's completely universal....... so honestly, don't get caught up in it all.

Your Son is being completely spoiled with that build, he's a lucky lad :D

Thank you. He’s been told this is basically his birthday and Xmas rolled into one. And then some... it’s his 13th though so kinda the first ‘big‘ birthday for him Becoming a teenager.

he’s a pretty good gamer. He has just started streaming and looking to set up a YouTube eventually. Essentially gaming is life (LOL) but he’s been on Xbox till now.

it’s all battle royal style games he focuses on so as long as this can cope with his fast game play I’m onto a winner.

so to conclude I think we are going for this unless any last min recommendations. Cheers everyone!!
