Corsair 5000D Airflow extra case fans

Hi all,

I've ordered a custom build with a Corsair 5000D Airflow case and an ASUS® TUF GAMING B550-PLUS ATX mobo.

I've also ordered a 2-fan 240mm AIO (Corsair H100x top mounted), and the case comes with 2 case fans pre-installed (one front, one rear).

The mobo specs have the following fan headers:

1 x CPU Fan connector(s)
1 x CPU OPT Fan connector(s)
3 x Chassis Fan connector(s)
1 x AIO_PUMP connector

Is it correct that PCS will use the CPU Fan and the CPU OPT Fan connectors for the two radiator fans and the AIO Pump header for the pump, leaving 3 Chassis (system?) Fan headers available for 3 remaining case fans (the 2 pre-installed and an optional 3rd)?

I'd like to replace the pre-installed 120mm front fan with 2 x 140mm front intake fans (Corsair AF140 Blue), I just wanted to make sure I have enough mobo fan headers without needing to buy a fan splitter? Will the case fans plugged into the Chassis Fan headers have variable speed control with some mobo software?

Doing the maths you should be good to remove the front fan and add 2 140mm

CPU Fan: 1st AIO fan
CPU OPT Fan: 2nd AIO fan
1st Chassis Fan: 1st 140mm Corsair fan
2nd Chassis Fan: 2nd 140mm Corsair fan
3rd Chassis fan: Rear 120mm included Corsair fan
AIO PUMP: pretty self explanatory 😂

As long as the PC is built right, which I have no doubt it would, you will be good to go. When it comes to variable case fan speeds. I’m honestly not sure, so I’ll leave that to someone else or good ol’ Google

There was no option in the build to add front fans, so I've ordered a couple and will install them myself once my system arrives (next week? 🙏).

If you upgraded to the H115i elite capellix, it comes with a commander - the pump plugs into the cpu_fan header and the commander, all fans then connect into the commander and that is connected to the motherboard, via a usb header.

Yeah, I read in a few places that it wasn't always possible to install a top 280 mm AIO in the 5000D due to space restrictions, so I downgraded to a 240mm just to be sure.

Had I been building the system myself, I would've ordered a 280mm and tried my luck but I didn't want to delay my build with PCS by taking chances.

Theres a couple of things you need to look at regarding the cooler.
The H100s Hydro series is an old model, I would really recommend sticking with the RGB Pro XT (do an amendment to go back).
You also -dont- want to change thermal pastes if taking a corsair cooler, they come with pre-applied high quality paste already.

Removing it and repasting can mean a bad paste job being more likely as it has to be cleaned off and new paste applied, and the paste is already a good quality one thats just as good. Paste jobs carry an element of pot luck anyway and I think they have a much better track record with the pre-applied.

What I didnt know, is what Ash has said about the Elite Capillex coming with a commander pro unit, which does solve any worries over the number of fans, so assuming you arent pushing budget too much (as everything else looks nicely paired) makes a lot of sense, your idea to drop to 2 x 140 at the front though also solves that issue, so its dealers choice really.
The 5600X CPU doesnt really that level of cooler (although it really doesnt hurt) and there are benefits to having the extra fans from it anyway before considering it gives you a fan controller as well...

so I guess you got options.

A 280 fits in a 4000D, so i assume it fits in the 5000D. I’ll double check, but i am almost certain it does.

It can infact fit 2 280's or 3 360's, the 5000D is a monster of a case. It's almost comical it's still considered mid-tower 😂

I'm not really fussed about fan hub controllers (or RGB fans), because I don't plan on having more than 3 case fans (2 front 1 rear) and two top AIO fans, assuming this delivers the right pressure inside the case?

I'm really only concerned with cooling and that everything fits comfortably, and although the H100x is probably a legacy AIO, I didn't think there would be much difference in efficiency (a few degrees Celsius?) between the H115i and the H100x.

There's quite a substantial difference actually, the H100x uses an older style pump that isn't anywhere near as efficient.

But more importantly, the H100x has no software connectivity, so you can't see pump speeds or anything, or set auto shutdowns or alarms if anything happens to the cooler. Plus the H100x is a lot noisier.

You'd also miss out on the integration with the iCue software that allows you so much more control over what goes on in relation to the fan speed, pump speed, temperatures etc.

In your shoes, I would take the Pro XT (regardless, the paste needs to be dropped).
I see no reason why you shouldnt be able to set fan curves that would work with your planned fan setup, so although the controller would give more flexibility, doesnt sound like you need/want or will use it.

The two AF140 fans you proposed, are they static?
I would look at what else were available if they were, but thats just my preference, looking at their rpm on the corsair site, i dont think they would have any issues but I like to be able to control rpm...maybe thats just my own preference though.

Although they are called ‘low noise’ they are quite a lot louder than ML fans

At that rpm, ML fans are silent. Is there a specific reason you want a specific fan setup?
