CPU fan error

Hi,

I recently replaced my CPU from a 5600x to 5950x. Every so often on restarting my pc i get CPU fan error?

cpu temp at idle is around 60c. On load when running games it goes up to 74c max.

I added thermal paste, applied the cpu cooler back on correctly as i can see it running when my pc is on.

In my bios on AIO pump comes up as N/A, is this normal as i cant remember seeing this before i changed cpu.

The cpu cooler im using is a coolermaster liquid lite 240.

Thanks

Is this a pcspecialist system? Can you post your full specs from the order page?

What header did you put the pump on on the board? And what header did you put the cooler fans on?

Yes its a PCS system, heres the full specs. I never removed the connector i just unscrewed the pump and fans when replacing cpu & left it to the side of the case.

Ah, I see.

What's the exact error? Is it saying a temperature warning, or is it a CPU_Fan not detected error?

Yes CPU_Fan not detected, which seems strange as my fans are running & my temps don't seem abnormally high do they?

I'm wondering whilst removing the pump i might have put it into its final days.

So need to know what’s on the CPU_Fan header, is it the pump or the fans?

CPU_Fan not detected means whatever is on that header is not reporting a connection, nothing to do with temps.

You can’t tell if the cooler is effective running a game, you have to run a known CPU load ie 100% with something like Prime95 for about 10 minutes and monitor temps during with HWMonitor. Before you end Prime95, take a screenshot of the CPU readings including frequencies and then end the stress test.

That will tell you if the cooler is up to the job. I suspect you’ll be thermal throttling with that cooler though, I would't choose it with that CPU

I thought you used the system for gaming though, how come you went for the 5950x?

I'm currently at work so i wouldn't be able to tell you right now. Sorry.

I'll try a stress test tomorrow though and see how it goes.

What cooler would you suggest? To be honest there was a deal on with that cpu & i read its the best performing CPU i could buy for my build.

Especially as the game i usually play is CPU heavy.

Happy for you to tell me otherwise though?

The 5950x is not a gaming CPU, it's greatly outperformed by the 5800X3D which costs significantly less.

The 5950x is a heavy multicore processor which isn't used in games, for things like rendering and heavy scientific workflows.

Did you not check benchmarks? I mean it's not even close, 5800X3D beats it by a country mile

You can see 1440p relatively recent benchmarks here: https://gamersnexus.net/cpus/amd-ryzen-7-2700x-2023-benchmarks-vs-5800x3d-7800x3d-cpu-upgrades

It's rarely even included in gaming benchmarks as it's just not for that use, entirely the wrong processor.

5950x is quite low for gaming, games just don't benefit from all those cores. Whereas you see the 5800X3D is generally up in the top 5 still even competing with current gen models. It's the X3D Cache combined with higher single core frequency that's so important for games, not cores.

Well there's my telling off for not coming to the forum before upgrading lol.

I'll see if i can send it back as i'll still be in the 14day window. If it's that much of a difference then i'll be shocked as i noticed a massive difference in FPS and smoothness from a 5600x to a 5950x.

You did post for advice but never responded when we asked about budget so we had no idea what components you could aim for

Where did you get the processor from? Most places these days are no issue at all with returns within 14 days. So long as the packaging is intact but even then most of them don’t mind. You should be fine returning it.

If it's Amazon, there's pretty much no question, they're the best returns policy on the planet.

It will save you quite a bit of cash as well as getting a significant performance boost, plus your current cooler should be fine with it.

Forgot i had posted that to be honest.

CPU was from scan all the packaging etc is in tact so should be good.

Thanks for the replies.

All the best, keep us posted.
5800X3D arrived today, updated bios. Installed CPU. The difference in smoothness of gaming is impressive. Fps wise there isn't a noticeable difference but it just feels so much smoother. On load cpu highest temp is 74 and 62 idle. I assume those must be the required temp settings. Thanks for this!

Urm, 62 idle is far far too high. As previous, you can't test temps in a game, you have to have a known load ie 100%. But if it's 62 on idle it suggests the cooler isn't working at all.

What make and model monitor are you using?

90c is the thermal limit on that CPU and it's reaching above that which means the cooler isn't sufficiently cooling even as it's underclocking.

Did you take that screesnhot while the test was still running after 10 minutes? The value shows the current useage and suggests either it wasn't taken while the stress was running, or it's clocking hugely low to ccmpensate for overheating.

But either way, that's not suitable. Either the cooler isn't properly attached, the repaste job or cleaning of old paste wasn't done correctly, or the cooler has failed.

This was within about 3 minutes of the test, i ended it when it got to 90c as i didn’t want to do damage. I have a feeling the cooler has failed as its running quite loud. Thermal paste isnt an issue as i put it on correctly with an even spread across the whole cpu.

You haven't said how you cleaned the CPU before applying paste?
