Defiance Laptop Overheating!!

I bought a Defiance laptop in March and I notice that the laptop is not cooling properly. The CPU temp is at 90 degrees whilst plugged in. It’s my second gaming laptop with this kind of fan software and I have created another RMA for a refund so I can get a different model. They said after the first return that they reapplied the thermal paste. Any ideas on fixes I can do to make the fans less noisy?

Here they are. It's strange. It only happens when I have my charger plugged in.. I run Windows 11 on both my PC and laptop and my PC runs fine it doesn't overheat.

Are you sure windows is properly configured? It will overheat if the drivers are not properly configured as the management driver won't be able to correctly patch in to the relevant drivers.

I read on one forum that selecting intergrated graphics helps and only use the card when playing games.

You need to ensure that you have done a clean install of windows, it is fully configured and updated and then installed the control centre software for that laptop.

It's not overheating, 90 is perfectly normal for intel, but the cooling won't be working as intended if Windows isn't configured as control center won't be able to connect to the various drivers.

I can only speak from experience, but for whatever reason, opening the control centre seems to monitor/check temperatures seems to drive up the temperatures for reasons I can't explain. I'd personally advise monitoring your temperatures using HWInfo64. It's less resource intensive and it has a lot more details to work with: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

Aside from that, summer weather + dust build up can cause temperatures to slowly creep up over time. Use a phone flash light and point it at the air vents, then check to see if there's potential dust clogging it up from the inside.

It’s not my first plastic gaming laptop I had. I’m looking at returning it and getting a more sturdy aluminium laptop that will make cooling better.

As said, if Windows isn't configured correctly cooling won't be working optimally, are you sure you've configured Windows correctly?

I installed all the drivers that was available to download. My laptop runs Windows 11 but the fans were also like that running Windows 10. Maybe I should go back to 10 see how it runs then.

Windows 11 is still in beta so drivers haven't been made for it yet, so it's pointless testing in there.

Absolutely. We can't troubleshoot a system that's not even released yet!

I assume you're a Windows Insider, so you should report all issues via the Feedback Hub.

If you installed them all from your PCS download page, that's not how you configure Windows 10. I'd strongly advise getting advice on how to properly clean install and configure windows as if not done properly you'll have various issues.

I don't think you're eligible for any refund as the laptop is working fine and it's well past your 14 day return window.

If it's overheating there's a reason for it as already stated, it won't go away until that reason is addressed at the source.

This is usually because of the following reasons:

1/. Hasn't been serviced and needs repasting. This is the usual first thing that people miss, any performance laptop needs regular maintenance and repasting or it will overheat and eventually burn out the cpu / motherboard.

2/. Windows isn't configured properly so the management driver isn't able to address the cooling as intended.

3/. The clocks have been amended outside of the bounds of the cooling capabilities.

Once you're sure those areas are addressed, then re-evaluate the PSU as that may well be another cause.

You don't need Clevo Control Centre or any specific driver - the embedded controller handles the default fan curves, CCC will let you adjust these but not stop them from working at all.

The correct answer is that 90 C is simply normal for this CPU in this laptop when under load. The only way to reduce the temperatures will be using something like Throttlestop to undervolt the CPU and maybe set a prochot offset if you are willing to lose a bit of performance in favour of lower temps.

Other option is use Fn+1 to cycle through fan modes and run on maximum fan speed.

We've found certainly on TongFang models, and it may be limited to those, that drivers being properly installed and therefor the control center app being able to work correctly has had a big influence on temps in 10th and 11th Gen chassis.

this laptop is < 1 year old. I would expect to go at least a year without needing servicing. are we in such a throwaway society that we can't expect that
2/. Windows isn't configured properly so the management driver isn't able to address the cooling as intended.
I know and appreciate you're trying to be helpful but "windows isn't configured properly" is such a general idea of a fix - what's "properly" have you found particular cases where this was so and what was wrong with windows
3/. The clocks have been amended outside of the bounds of the cooling capabilities.
this is not the case

well as I said the transformer on the power cable gets incredibly hot and the fans take off when plugged in. overheating issue only occurs when plugged in so seems kind of obvious

this is not the case

Look, I'm just trying to educate you on what is a common misconception by people who don't know how to properly configure a system, on a custom laptop if it's not configured correctly from the points raised above, then you'll face overheating plain and simple. It's nothing wrong with the hardware 9 time out of 10, it's because it hasn't been setup at a software level properly or because maintenance is required.

The reason it's only present plugged in is because it's a laptop and it throttles performance on battery. So it's not running to its full capabilities.

But you sound like you know what the issue is so I'll offer no further advice.

You're either open to working a solution, or you've made your mind up without any troubleshooting to conclude that assumption. It's not possible to work with the latter types I'm afraid, takes too much effort
